I can't find any information to modify the setup text on a version of windows that uses i386 installation. I have been able to modify WINNTBBA/BBU but that's for the GUI setup. does anyone know how to modify the text in the 1st step of setup? I will put a picture here just for reference.

The messages are all found inside USETUP.EXE on the CD (it's uncompressed). I bet you could even use something like Resource Hacker to change the text.

Thanks for the help, it's working! But where is the "Windows Setup" text located at the very very beginning of setup?3155ffGd wrote:The messages are all found inside USETUP.EXE on the CD (it's uncompressed). I bet you could even use something like Resource Hacker to change the text.

Some very early messages can be found in SETUPLDR.BIN (I think everything in the boot process up to "Starting Windows Setup" is in there). They're in OEM code page (i. e. MS-DOS) and require a hex editor to edit.

Thanks for telling me! I'm making a hack of Windows XP that is slimmed down to work like Windows 2000. Also, do you know where this is (picture below)?3155ffGd wrote:Some very early messages can be found in SETUPLDR.BIN (I think everything in the boot process up to "Starting Windows Setup" is in there). My best guess would be winbrand.dll, which contains all the appropriate bootscreens for all SKUs (regular, starter, embedded and WinFLP) and then the "Please wait..." text is just printed over the boot screen as text. msobmain.dll (installed in /system32/oobe by default) has appropriate text and boot screens that were used before SP2 (I think) so that may be it but don't count me on that.

It's smss.exe located in /i386/system32. usetup.exe is only used for upgrade(as for the first question)

I know, I just figured that out. Thanks for all the help! I just finished my Windows 2002 project (XP but it has 2000 functionality)!ovctvct wrote:It's smss.exe located in /i386/system32. usetup.exe is only used for upgrade(as for the first question)

I just felt like I wanted a version of Windows that looked almost exactly like Windows 2000 but had other features like ClearType and the improved Tasks panel (Those weren't in 2K) I don't know if I can post it yet, as I'm still not exactly sure if XP will be abandonware anytime soon. Plus, the key is preinstalled to prevent OOBE issues (removed it due to space on the CD and the HDD you installed Win2K2 on).jinzou ningen wrote:Why have you decided to get xp look like windows 2000?superlions16 wrote:I know, I just figured that out. It also works on AT and MPS machines like XP does.
