Planned FTP downtime

Post by mrpijey »

This weekend I am going to do a full server upgrade which includes the BA FTP server. I am moving to new hardware and new storage systems. This affects only the FTP and not the forum itself.

The downtime shouldn't be more than a day but it depends on how well the upgrade goes, it can be down for a single day or the entire weekend.

The FTP shutdown is planned for friday evening or saturday morning.

Will you add more storage?

No I won't add more space for the time being.

We got 8.2TB of free space after the latest drive upgrades i did a few weeks ago. I will however move to a newer server, and a new SAN storage solution.

What are the rough de-duplication stats now that you've hit 80+TB?

I'm glad that we now hit 80TB from the recent Windows 10 beta builds. However, I'd probably getting a little bit more storage later since most betas nowadays takes a lot of disk space.

When you have a chance, please post a few more details about the SAN. I'd be curious to know what specific hardware you'll be using for that.

I will post updated dedup info after the migration.

If members are interested I could make a new post like the previous "BetaArchive FTP Server: The Old vs The New" post I did after the last upgrade. There I can layout more in detail what hardware is being used, what software and general layout etc.

Remember that this upgrade is not only for the BA FTP. My server is also used for my own personal stuff as well as some other projects I am involved in so the current or new specs of the server are not representative of "The BetaArchive FTP server", but rather the infrastructure and hardware the FTP resides on along many other services.

Yes, please do!
I upload stuff to archive.org from time to time. See here for everything that doesn't fit BA

Status update: Everything is setup except for the VPN between the main host and the FTP. It doesn't seem to work properly so it needs troubleshooting. Will continue tomorrow Saturday.

Status update: FTP is back online! There are some minor things that are yet not online (server status, FTP lists etc) but I am working on them today and they should be up by the end of the day.

Status update: Seems the celebration was a bit premature... FTP speeds are incredibly slow, the VPN connection doesn't get the throughput it's supposed to get. Still checking.

Strange. I usually get around 200kb/s download speeds. I am only getting 108kb/s. Checked our internet speed, and it is quite good at around 232kb/s. Maybe new settings and such?

I've had people report faster speeds so it could just be routing or something. There are new settings yes (since there's new hardware) but we'll have to monitor the speeds over time and see if gets better.

Lists are back online as well. Andy will work on the graphs and set it up as soon as possible.

I will be monitoring the bandwidth and speed over the next few days, but expect some slowdowns since I am doing some heavy copying between drives during the setup of my server (FTP server is shared with other VMs).

As promised I've put together a small info page regarding the new server setup. It can be found here.
