Windows NT 4.0 Updates

Post by WATERMELONS10 »

Was Windows NT 4.0 updated only using service packs? I know that Microsoft released Windows update for NT 4.0, but that obviously has since been decommissioned. I am just wondering that if I want to update it, is it just Service Packs or are there individual hotfixes that were also made available that would be needed to fully patch an instance of NT 4.0.

There were 6 service packs for NT 4.0

These included all of the hot fixes that were released prior to the service pack release date all in a single download, as well as new features. Some of the hot fixes I think were release desperately on the Microsoft ftp server, but the service packs were mainly distributed on CD-ROM at the time.

There was a issue with service pack 6 which was patched to SP 6a which is still available from Microsoft for download via their web site.

For some features you needed SP3 and above as this one had a lot of new features not just fixes. One prime example was support for larger hard drives.

There was a plan to release a SP7 but it never got releases due to the move to Win 2000. The last set of hot fixes were released in a package called 'Post Service Pack 6a Security Rollup' which again is still available but more difficult to find.

So does SP6a include all the updates, fixes, and etc. that were ever released for NT 4.0 up till its EOL date?

No. There were many many updates released after SP6a and the update rollup pack.

Please see http://nt4ref.zcm.com.au/patch.htm for reference.

And can we get these updates with the TechNet and downloads discs in the FTP? Or should we search elsewhere?

Some/all of them are still available on the Internet Archive. Just use Google to find the direct download link and then feed that to archive.org and it should give out something useful.

What about patches released after "Security rollup"? Windows Update v3.1 was working until about two-three years ago, I don't know if there were more patches released.

Does anyone know about or have those patches?

I believe MDGx still hosts most of the patches. For links on MS's website you can use the wayback machine.

Sounds fine, but where can I even find the list of those patches? I'm not sure if these listed on MDGx website are really those released after the Security Rollup.

You'll have to check with the list of updates in the security rollup.

Right. Thank you for your help.

If anyone know about such list or place with the entire archive of those updates, please put a message.

Thank you very much

As I see, those files are "raw" files, I mean that they are not simple EXE files which someone can install. Could you instruct me how to integrate those files with the installed Windows NT 4.0 SP6a SRP system?

You run the setup or hotfix program in the directories.

BUMP: Seems as though the original download link mentioned in the below quote has gone down.
I used to have this, but unfortunately I lost most of my NT4 stuff. A reupload would be appreciated.
