(OFFER) Windows NT 5.0 Workstation Build 1575

Post by DiskingRound »

This build is from June 10, 1997. This build is the second oldest NT 5.0 build we now have only newer than 1515.

I tried to install in VirtualBox, upgrading from NT 4.0, but I get either stuck at the text-based setup in a loop asking me for the CD when it is in the drive, or this bluescreen:

This is not supposed to happen. Any ideas???

Nice! I might try to install it on 86box.

Yep. I wish I had my main computer for now but I have to wait until Friday.

For these builds do not boot from the CD. Boot via a bootdisk and use winnt.exe.

Or create the three boot disks.

Edit: screenshots:

The video part of this build is almost broken...

Nice! How did you install it and what software did you use? Funny that the text beneath the icons are underlined, just like 1585. What are those two icons down there next to the start button BTW?

WebTV for Windows (or the icon for Internet Explorer as in other Memphis and NT builds from 1997) and Show Desktop.

Clicking on the TV icon opens up some sort of a Active Channel browser:

Wow that's so interesting. In 1585, it's an IE icon, and in 1515, there is only a small show desktop icon in the corner.

Kinda surprising to see a new pre-beta NT5 build to finally surface.

Where was this build found? :)

From my attempts, I cannot install this build. I tried in 86box and in Virtual PC, but the results are the same. I use a Windows 95 bootdisk to format the hard drive, and then run winnt.exe off of the iso However, once it restarts to go to the second part of the setup it sits at a black screen with the words "OS Loader v5.0" flashing repeatedly. Did I do something wrong? (or maybe this build hates me)

Try upgrading from NT 4.0. I also had this problem.

The reason behind stucking at "OS Loader" is mostly because BOOTSECT.DAT points to NTLDR instead of $LDR$ (SETUPLDR.BIN). Basically it tells NTLDR to reload itself but not $LDR$.

Open BOOTSECT.DAT for hex/binary editing (using HxD or from DOS via "edit /80 C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT"), and replace the first NTLDR string with $LDR$, as highlighted here and save:

Upgrading from NT 4.0 does not work for me on PCem. On the reboot to TXT Setup it keeps wanting me to use the NT 4.0 disk, then it crashes with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

Follow the instructions on his post, as he just edited it.
Thanks to his instructions. I was able to install this build on VirtualBox without problems.
...
This build has a very buggy graphics. Looks like one of those Win32 viruses on Danooct1's channel. Would actually be cool trying out one of those on this build.
Image
The version of IE4 is 4.70.911, by the way. Despite this and the build number, I actually think it feels closer to 1515 than 1585.

It's not a bug with the graphics, it's a bug with this build's explorer, which makes it have a seizure when Web View (read: single click hyperlinks) is enabled. Disable it to make it look sane again.

Also, IMO, I'm not too sure where you're getting a resemblance to 1515 here, as this has way more similarities to 1585 than 1515.

Anyway, nice find, and let's hope stuff like this keeps coming.

1515 integrates with internet features such as Active Desktop. This build uses the internet-based explorer if I'm correct. Due to being early it has issues that causes the window trailing. I also find it being quite close to 1515 in features but 1585 in appearance.
