VPC 2007 alternative for Windows 10 x64?

Post by kyle62 »

As you may know, Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is the best solution for certain betas of OSes such as Windows 95, 98. However, it only runs on hosts up to Windows 7 (8.1 with a patched file). However, this patch will not work on Windows 10. Does anyone know of the best alternative to run these betas (namely Chicago, and Memphis) on Windows 10? Or should i just go back to an older host OS?

You can use 86box for running legacy operating systems there

VMWare Player might be your best bet for free.

I got it to work on my Windows 10 laptop, using this guide. Unfortunately, my installation is a x86 one, so I'm not sure how it will work in x64, but it's worth a shot.

Virtual PC 2007 won't work with Windows 10 x64 because of some internal changes in the kernel possibly caused by a coincidental change in the used compiler (two registers were swapped inside a method and vmm.sys apparently relies on the previous implementation). As mentioned previously, 86Box and PCem are equivalent to VPC2007 for Chicago and Memphis betas.

+1 on VMWare for NT based operating systems, as well as Linux and macOS. VMWare Player really is a great virtualizer for the price, or rather the lack of that ;)
I'd still recommend something else for 9x or older operating systems. I haven't used PCem or 86box myself, but they sound like they're a good fit for those older Windows operating systems.
