Windows 98 SE setup froze after updating system settings
Windows 98 SE setup froze after updating system settings
I installed Windows 98 SE on my Acer Aspire one D250 netbook but after when the Final Part of setup setting time zone and that when i reached Updating System settings it was halfway there but setup froze after my hard drive wasn't responding is there anything to fix this so i can get to the desktop so i can install the drivers for it and play some games on it. P.S is there drivers for Windows 98 SE for my acer netbook. Thx!
Re: Windows 98 SE setup froze after updating system settings
You can try again, but I think the installer might not handle the laptop so well due to how new it is. As for drivers, XP and Win7 only on website, highly doubt 98SE was ever considered for the device at all.

Check your RAM. Windows 98 doesn't like more than 1 GB of memory.
Also I would recommend installing it on the Intel(r) Pentium(r) series.

If you can, remove some of the RAM.
98 and ME can go up to 512MB but any higher and it won't work properly.

There appear to be multiple issues.
1. Too much RAM. You can reduce the RAM or install my RAM Limitation Patch.
2. Your Hard Drive exceeds the maximum 137GB supported by Windows 9x. My High Capacity Disk Patch can add support.
3. You may have a Native Mode Hard Disk Controller. Try renaming the WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\ESDI_506.PDR File. If it works, you may want to use my SATA Patch.
There are free Demos of the RAM Limitation and High Capacity Disk Patches.

Nope. The limit is actually 1.5GB (I know this from a youtube video in which someone tried it in a vm and after they went over 1.5GB, the system wouldn't boot).Windows Thunderstruck wrote:If you can, remove some of the RAM.

Pseudo-localized builds are awesome!
Re: Windows 98 SE setup froze after updating system settings
Without any modifications Windows 98 will stop working properly above approximately 768MB on most systems. If you limit the Cache, it will work up to 1152MB.
Windows ME can run up to approximately 1.9GB.
My Patch raises the limit to 4GiB although most motherboards limit the available 32-Bit RAM to 2.5-3.5GiB.
