Microsoft Chicago build 58s hangs at bootscreen
Windows Chicago build 58s is just displaying a cursor after the bootscreen on virtualbox and VMware.
It looks perfectly fine, but then it does this...

From where did you installed Chicago 58s?

Read this thread for why you should not use VirtualBox or VMWare to run such builds. Use an emulator instead.

Re: Microsoft Chicago build 58s hangs at bootscreen
You guys say you need to use 86-Box, don't use VBox or VMware. I installed 58s on both of those. So you probably did something wrong.
Can you explain what you did to install?

Re: Microsoft Chicago build 58s hangs at bootscreen
WindowsCollecter2000, here is the explanation
1. I inserted the Windows 95 boot floppy.
2. I fdisked and formatted C:.
3. I went to the Chicago CD-ROM
4. I typed in dossetup
5. I set it up
6. I restarted computer and set Buffers=30 and Files=60 to Buffers=90 and Files=90.
7. I ran the operating system, which looked just fine, then it showed a flashing cursor.

Re: Microsoft Chicago build 58s hangs at bootscreen
@DVINTHEHOUSEMAN - Huh, that would be the proper way. What would happen if you tried upgrading from 3.1?
@Battler - You may be right, as my desktop sucks, gamingwise. Anything that would require 86Box (Besides anything under 3.0) worked perfectly on VBox or VMware. Haven't tried it with my laptop yet since I'm still messing around with VPC, but I'll grab VBox and VMware soon.

I tried that already... I got the "Switch to Chicago" icon on 3.1, but when i tried to double click it it did nothing.

And btw 86box is VERY SLOW. When i typed in dossetup it sat and did nothing, even with 16 mb of ram, which works perfectly fine with vmware.

Windows 3.1 Beta and Windows 95 Beta do work on VirtualBox. Windows Beta 95 Build 81, 99, 122, 180, 189 do work on VirtualBox. But Build 58s have KRNL386.EXE error on VirtualBox. Windows 95 Beta Build 58 can be work on VPC2007.

And your KRNL386 problem can be fixed with a tool I used back on my desktop called WDPSL/WNTPSL. It has a fix for the 58s KRNL386 error. All credit goes to gus33000 for WDPSL.

Yes. Because the original machines it emulates were slow as well. The purpose of emulators is to emulate all aspects of a machine, including its speed.DVINTHEHOUSEMAN wrote:And btw 86box is VERY SLOW. Of course, nobody prevents you from running Chicago on a modern i7 (which is what you basically do with VMware), but don't expect an operating system to fully cooperate with a machine that's 20 years newer than the OS itself.

That's new. Did you turn on Write-Protection in your floppy settings?
In VMware, go to your VM settings, go to your floppy disk, and turn off Read-Only.
In VBox, it doesn't really say. I'll recommend VBox at the moment with WDPSL. Give that a try.

Give 86Box a try, it's far simpler. No need to use third-party hacks.

It's normal it is slow, what do you expect from an emulator rather than a virtualizer?DVINTHEHOUSEMAN wrote:I will say what i have said before...DVINTHEHOUSEMAN wrote:And btw 86box is VERY SLOW. - DVINTHEHOUSEMAN: What board and CPU did you emulate anyway?
Also, I suggest you to try a real period machine with the same specs you emulated, you'll find out it's just as slow.

Re: Microsoft Chicago build 58s hangs at bootscreen
My machine generally has acceptable speeds running 86box when emulating a CPU at 75 MHz or lower (as in, similar to that of a real machine), but whenever I set the 86box emulator to emulate anything faster than that, the sound and graphics start slowing down to the point where the sound even becomes unbearably choppy, and when emulating a CPU at 200 MHz or higher, the sound is so slow that it is virtually unusable in that regard. This happens with all emulated CPUs at such high speeds regardless of brand or generation, and even with the dynamic recompiler turned on at that. Possibly the original poster was experiencing something similar.Battler wrote:- DVINTHEHOUSEMAN: What board and CPU did you emulate anyway?
