Janus is interesting. When you do a clean install, it looks like normal MS-DOS 5.00 Setup followed by Windows 3.1 Setup, except that MS-DOS Setup looks closer to 6.00 than 5.00, I suspect the color scheme was changed for Janus so it matches that of Windows 3.1 Setup, and then MS-DOS 6.00 inherited that. If you do an upgrade, however, you get to see Windows GUI dialogs for DOS stuff.

Interesting to know that an official MS-DOS + Windows installer combo (Janus) exists. I thought that combo installs like that can only be achieved through unofficial methods. This two-birds-with-one-stone installer might be useful for those with IBM PCs/PC compatibles in need of a better way to re-install. Good luck getting it to work.

I fixed the floppy images, redownload them from the same link as before.

Interesting to know that an official MS-DOS + Windows installer combo (Janus) exists.

According to the Anti-Trust documents, it had a successor, too, called Jastro (a portmanteau of Janus and MS-DOS 6.00's codename, Astro), which installed MS-DOS 6.00 and Windows 3.1 together. This was apparently also used in early Chicago builds before 58s replaced it with the new Chicago Setup.

The 'janus' set reminds me more of this than the janus beta. It's more akin to what one might release with a box.

I installed PC-DOS 5.02, a base version, and then installed this over the top. It runs a treat. It's pretty much msdos 5.00 and windows 3.1, but the link above is a former MSFT knowledge-base thingie, with pretty mich the same layout.

Also, Janus was never the codename of Windows 3.1, that was probably someone's misunderstanding. According the Anti-Trust documents, Janus was always this - the combined MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1 Setup. It makes sense too, since Janus was the Roman two-headed god.

Delsame removes duplicates by size and crc. So it picks up renamed files. It's the first flush for finding interesting things.

We see here the setup routines, the readme files, JANUS has networking files and disk backup/restore.

SETUP.INF is identical to most parts, except disk layout, except janus refers to [winos2] at line 1534.

The DOS files are compressed with the full name embedded, so expand -r works. This is different to the Windows files.

The reference to winos2 in the janus setup, suggests that WW0981 has been applied to windows 3.1 base install. The files in janus are different to ww0981, though.
