Windows 2000 interesting find

Post by SuperThecomputergeek »

i found a interesting find in the bitmaps of explorer.exe
it's the show desktop button from the early builds of windows 2000 except it uses the icon for the taskbar shorcut
my guess is they were planning to make it a setting (enable-disable it) unlike in windows 7 through 10.

Here they are:

Windows XP also had a show-desktop button if that's what you mean.

The point he wants to make is that the button is at the right-most position, just like in Windows 7 and newer.

It's one of those beta features that appears on a early beta, then disappears for a while, then reappears on a newer beta, only for it to disappear and get cancelled by RTM. Reminds me of WinFS. Anyhoo, the "Show Desktop" button like this reappears in NT 5.0 build 1592 after the appearance in 1515 (as far as I know. The wiki does not have much about NT5/2000. Most of the populated pages are basically "A warez seen leaked this back in the day, but we don't have it. SORRY!!!!!"). Here's a screenshot of 1592:

Just imagine that Microsoft would have kept the "Show Desktop" button on RTM & all newer versions of Windows (XP, Vista) would also have the icon on the right side of the taskbar.. That's pretty interesting actually. It's the same thing with Longhorn, Microsoft bloated the OS with too many new features and removed some of it in RTM. The best feature on Windows 7 is actually the "Show Desktop" button. I really use it a lot :D
The "Wow" ends now. :(

It allows you to do a simple task in a single click instead of two, which may not sound like much but is quite useful to me as well.

This was also in some Memphis builds IIRC, not sure why they completely removed this feature and didn't think of it again until Windows 7...

I've always wanted to make that Show Desktop from NT 5.0 builds possible on NT 4.0 or W2000.
Long live Windows XP!

as i remember show desktop was always in quicklaunch automaticly put by install
can't see the reason why to have it on right side where you can't add any other usable functions

in win7 case they maybe had to because whole IE vs EU issue, but quicklaunch folder
with its goodies is still there, you just need to find it in appdata/roaming and re-enable it
