Vista 5231 error in VMware player

Post by DiskingRound »

Whenever I try to install Windows Vista build 5231 on VMware Player 7 I get this BSOD:
Image
Now, before you tell me "use VPC 2007, does not work in VMware". I must say that I am posting this from Windows 8.1 Update 1 (build 6.3.9600.17041) so therefore VMware is my only solution. I could do that patch eventually. So is there a way to fix this? Or do I have to get VMware Workstation and set the compatibility mode?

Well, you could stop being lazy... 8-)

Here we go again:
Do you ever look at the collection book? It clearly shows that you must use Virtual PC 2007 instead of vmware otherwise, there will be a BSOD. Here is a screenshot:

And also, how about stop being lazy, trying to post every single thing you have trouble with here on BetaArchive and actually do some research before you post. I had trouble trying to install Longhorn 4074 in VMware but I didn't post here on BetaArchive, but then eventually I found out my solution. This is the same with trying to enable DWM in 4066. So here is the solution: Stop being lazy then follow a guide on one of the Google links to help patch Virtual PC 2007 for you to use on your PC(not trying to backseat moderate Battler and mods but rather helping DiskingRound.)

If you must install this on VMware, you must use 5.x compatibility mode (in Workstation) or use any Workstation version before 6.0.0. (Player will not work, as it's earliest version is based off Workstation 6.5.) Otherwise, it's curtains for your chances of installing this build without using patches.

By the way, VPC 2007 is supported all the way through 6.4.9841 if you use a later VMM.sys version. I forgot where you could get it though.

NOTE: I don't know whether this also supports 9860 or 9879, but any 10.0 build will not work.

At least, it is not supported by NVidia Graphics Driver, it crashes the display driver when running... This is why I never try to recommend VPC at first, but if you have another PC running W7, you can try it.

Gee, thanks for the info! It did not work on my main computer (running Windows 8) which has a Nvidia graphics card. Now, I know why. Is there any way you can resolve this?

You can try to uninstall the Nvidia Display Driver, but that would cause many problems (Untested) or downgrade to W7

Actually 6.0 comp. mode, not 5.x. BTW why use VPC when you can get aero on 5231 with vmware(with 6.5 drivers), as I did in a previous experiment: http://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewto ... 62&t=33644

Not everything on TCB is correct. You CAN use VMWare with 5231, if you set it to 6.0 compatibility.
EDIT: Here is it working if you can't believe me:

I'll download and try the x64 (5231.2) version to see if that works as it has more or less the same features as its .0 x86 counterpart. If it doesn't work, I can still install VPC2007 w/the patch and try to get 5231.0 to install in that. Thanks to everyone for their input.
Edit: Nope, still not working. I am trying to install this build in VPC2007.

It seems that you're using Workstation 7.1. When using 10 or 11, 6.0 comp. will not work, so you will have to use 5.x.

Post deleted, read the next one. I had a power cut, which apparently caused me to lose my work and post this post.

Well, there's good news tonight. Take a look at this: (Sorry for bumping and triple posting by accident, but this is quite important.)

Image

Basically, you have to use the 306.23 NVIDIA drivers, use a later VMM.sys version, set VPC 2007's compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3 and run it as Administrator. (The last part may not be needed, but that's what I used.)
Even if it crashes, the 306.23 driver is still able to recover, unlike later versions.

I tested this on Windows 8 x64 Build 9200.17218, with a NVIDIA Geforce GT 640.

Windows 95 does not work on this 3.4 GHz processor, for obvious reasons.
