Tips: Installing Active Desktop from IE5 or IE6

Post by xkai »

When installing IE4 on Windows 95/NT4, you will be asked to install Active Desktop, which improved Windows desktop, start menu, Windows Explorer and some other new features.
But if you are installing IE5 or IE6 on Windows 95/NT4, Setup will not update your Windows Shell.
Actually, Active Desktop still exists in IE5/6's Setup files. We can install it following these steps:
1. Install IE5/6 normally. When Setup prompts you to restart, do the following steps 2-4 first.
2. Find ie4shl95.cab for Windows 95 or ie4shlnt.cab for NT4 and extract it to a temporary folder.
3.In this temporary folder, right-click the file "IE4shell.inf" and select "Install".
4. when you are prompted that "wallpapr.htm" cannot be copied, just skip it.
5. Reboot. When your PC finished starting and the Windows desktop appears, click Start->Run and run the following two commands to register these files.
regsvr32 webvw.dll
regsvr32 ie4tour.dll

But I'm wondering how can I make Windows-2000-like UI work on Windows NT 4.

If only i knew about this when IE 5 rolled around... wasted a whole lot of time installing IE4 back in the day.
