[TUTORIAL] Find File numbers out Fast

Post by Namronia »

How to find unleaked builds in file's Builds Tag fast? Use this Tutorial!

1. Install
Start VmWare and Create a new Virtual PC.
Image

Dobleclick the "CD ROM (IDE 1:0)" and choose the File (Bootable ISO, if its DOS or any other Floppy OS, do the same with Floppy!) you want to Install
Image

After that start the VM and boot from CD. The setup starts after that (Here its a german XP TabletPC 05).

2. Shut down
After Installing the Operating System shut it down and Doubleclick on the HD in VMWare (you can check the Tags without, directly in vmware, but thats better,

believe me!).

Now you could shut down, windows is installed for 100%.

3. Mount HD

Doubleclick "HD" and then "Utilities" and "Map".

After That you just click "OK".

4. Show File Versions

After mounting the VM, go into the Directory you want to see. For me It's :\Window\System32. Then right click, you can see that in the Image and click

"More".

In this menu search for "File Version" and hit it. Then press "OK".

Sort the files and the ones with Build numbers are on the Top.

WARNING

Disconnect the Disk in VMware or your not able to start the VM again until restarting the Real PC!

Just click on "HD" in Vmware, then "Utilities" and then "Disconnect".

Have fun with that Tutorial and find lots of new Builds!

Builds earlier than Windows 95 Beta Build 177 you cant install in Vmware, use VirtualPC and Convert it.

You could also use my getvers, which automatically extracts all file versions from an ISO, no installation needed. Here is the output for Whistler build 2430 Professional.

You can also open VPC's HD images in WinImage last time I checked, much easier than first converting them.

(And, to all the PPC Mac lovers out there: If you're running Virtual PC on a PowerPC-based Mac, you can just mount its HD images as well.)

Thanks for the tutorial....it helps me a lot. I am still leaning how to use WMware to access to the internet, take screenshot, and recording movies.
