List of Windows 2000 Updates

Post by drfsupercenter »

Even though 2000 has been out of the Microsoft support realm for quite a while, I vividly recall Windows Update's website working as recently as a year ago with virtual machines of Windows 2000 Professional. You just had to have IE6SP1 installed first.

Well now, obviously, it doesn't work. However, it's rather strange - unlike in 98SE and Me where it just redirects to an endless loop forever, it gives a page indicating why the site might not work (almost as if you're on Windows XP!)

So, I'm curious about a couple things.

1. Has anyone been able to access the Windows Update website or use Automatic Updates in 2000 recently?
2. Does anyone have a complete list of KB updates that came after SP4 (the newest SP)? It would be nice to have a folder of them so that you can basically have as new of a clean installation as possible, as if you had installed it back when Windows Update worked and fully updated it before support ended.

Well... On my VM with Windows 2000, Windows Update (and Microsoft Update) are working. Here are some screenshots and a list of installed programs and updates (Note: some of them are unofficial):

Also Windows 2000 can run even Office 2007 and you could get Office 2010 to install, but it will crash the VM. I hope this message was helpful.

I can't seem to get Windows update to work at all on a win2k vm. It usually consists of some ambiguous error codes, which after addressed, just has the Windows update page in a refresh loop.

However, there IS a solution. wsusscn2.cab, which holds the updates for Windows 2k (and above) is still updated (see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=74689). With that said, aside from rolling your own solution, wsus offline update 6.6.5 will work to download and create an install ISO from all of the patches

I use "WSUS Offline" too keep a storage of all patches from Windows Updates (at least the ones in the Windows Update Service Catalog).
I have virtual machines for most Windows versions to keep checking the missed IDs that are not downloaded by WSUS Offline, and customize its scripts to include that IDs.

For Windows 2000 (Professional as this is the only one I have) there's no new updates showing up for a long time.
I'm pretty sure Microsoft could remove it from catalog at any moment.

By the way, I was looking for some similar solution for Win9x, but never found one. If someone knows some kind of program that downloads Win9x updates, please let me know.

Usually you need to keep the Root Certificates updated in Windows 2000 to be able to access the Windows Update site without any issues (using IE6 SP1), and it still works normally.

That brings up an interesting question - what would happen if you set up a Windows domain and put the Windows Server Update Services on it, then joined a Windows 2000 machine to the domain? Would you still be able to install the updates that way?

It's impossible to access Windows Update in Windows 2000 because it's unsupported since July 13, 2010.

For list of updates after SP4 (2005-2010), try to find some solutions on Microsoft Support.

You could try http://www.windowsupdatesdownloader.com/ (Windows 2000 SP4 updates only) but it supports other operating systems aswell

You'll have to install a few updates manually before the Windows Update website works under Windows Y2K.

Image

After you've installed all of these it'll work. They're all available on Microsoft's website.

But does anyone know a way to save them offline in a way that we can install all of the updates using a script or something? Wsus Offline doesn't support Windows 2000 anymore (and the older version skips a few updates). I'm afraid that at one point Micosoft will take down their entire Windows Update website, especialy because XP is going to be dead soon.

I've customized the WSUSOffline to add the missing IDs (about 4 or 5 IDs for Win2000 Pro if I remember well). It's very easy to customize it, as it has been developed to be customized.
Every critical and recommended update is installed normally.

After using WSUSOffline, the only missing updates are all optionals: Base Smart Card, .NET 1.1, .NET 2.0 and ancient Root Certificates from 2006, that I prefer to install them manually when needed.
I periodically use a VM to check for new updates, but it's been years now without new pending updates showing up in the site.

If you wanted Windows 2000 support in WSUSOffline, you can just use an older version (ie version 6.2) and they're all archived on their website :P. Saying that though, Windows Update still works for the time being IF you install the following updates first (in order):

- Windows 2000 SP4 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download ... px?id=4127)
- Windows Installer 3.1 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download ... aspx?id=25)
- IE 6 (http://www.oldapps.com/internet_explore ... xplorer=11) *uses Oldapps because Microsoft's IE download servers have been taken down*
- Windows Update Agent (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 32139.aspx)
- Roots Update (http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdow ... 75229e.exe)

Reboot and check your date and time is current. Windows Update is now available! :D

Thanks! abc_harold Windows Update and Microsoft Update works. IE SP1 is downloaded and installed from MU, cant seem to find a standalone installer for it on the web. The Roots Update don't show anything when its installing must be a quiet installer. Now updating my 2000 VM with all updates it finds.

@OP IE 6 (without SP1) will work also with the above updates to access WU\MU.

Yeah, the Roots Update is silent, that baffled me at first too! :P I don't believe that Windows Update for Windows 2000 will be turned off until XP's does, so another 5 years at the least (until POSReady 2009 EoS)! :D

Do you think windows update will be turned off for windows 98. Extended support ended in July 2006 (i think), if we apply the roots update, windows installer and windows update agent from your post here do you think it will work.

I just grab the latest updates through windows2000.tk, the home of all official and unofficial updates for win2k. They've added .NET 3.0-4.0 support, and various other xp-era additions to the kernel.
