Post by Andreas »

As far I know , Windows CE 6.0 used in industrial controllers and consumer electronics devices . And the question is how did they make Windows CE 6.0 work in VirtualPC 2007 ?

Windows CE is able to run on both Intel x86 and ARM processors so installing it in VPC2007 would not be a problem.

I have an ARM-based GPS that uses Windows CE. Googling revealed putting a file in the root of the SD card dropped you straight to the desktop instead of the internal shell. Which revealed some stuff like internal testing stuff in the filesystem. Also, Pocket IE and WinRAR.

Microsoft even produced a CE 6.0 BSP for specifically for Virtual PC, and I believe it's included in 7 by default.

That's what I meant - Virtual PC (I didn't mention version, but 2007 is the only "supported" target), available for CE 6.0 and included in CE 7.0 iirc.

Windows CE can run on Virtual PC 2007.
I'm used Visual Studio 2005. It builded Windows CE boot loader, than i'm started VM.
After starting, WinCE Boot Loader loaded all files using ethernet-controller.

Hello, I would be very pleasured if someone can explain how and which network driver for wince 6.0 should be installed in platform builder to work with Virtual PC? Thank you in advance.

You can bootstrap x86 Windows CE images via MS DOS. Once you have the image and the boot loader, the rest is simple.

There are some examples here: https://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/s/0119.asp

It would be a miracle, if Windows CE versions 6.0 onwards would run on VirtualBox and/or VMware.

That will of course never happen as neither Oracle or VMWare would have any financial incentives to support an already dead and unsupported platform, especially one with a CPU architecture that isn't even supported natively in their products.

This CE 5 emulator is interesting to me, as I think it's based on VPC 2004. Some of the interface is similar, and they both can't run on x64. I'm downloading Compact 7's toolkit from MSDN right now, and I'll try installing it on VMware. (7.8 GB :()
