How to Install VPC2007 on win7/8

Post by WindowsNeptune »

One of my friends found that you can rename the setup.exe, for example to 123.exe.
Then the system won't tell you anything about "this program is not suitable for this version of windows".
After install the VPC, go to the install path and then rename the Virtual PC.exe to another names like abc.exe.
Then, you can use the VPC like on XP or vista.

Yes, it works. But when I start a virtual machine Windows 8 gives me a BSOD.
Main OS: Windows 2000 SP4, dual-booted with Ubuntu 12.10 using Wubi
Windows XP: CRAP! Windows Vista: CRAP! Windows 7: CRAP! Windows 8: CRAP!
Windows 2000 = LOVE!!!
P.S.: Is this a contributing post?

In Windows 8 MS VPC can be installed, and the program runs after renaming, can create/add VMs normally. However when I attempt to start any VM, the system immediately BSODs.

Well,in my OS-win7,it works well.
I had already installed Chicago,Memphis,Neptune and so on but never got BSOD.
I don't know why? Because my OS is Chinese edition? I don't think so....
maybe some settings?

I don't think there is anything to do with language, but rather some driver in Windows 8 conflicts with VPC.

This works on Windows 8 RTM x32: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5GV_-ehWrs.
I'm trying it now on x64 system.

Edit: Doesn't work on x64 system. Reason: BSOD when starting a virtual machine. But works on x32 system.

Sorry, using a 64-bit installation of Windows 8 Release Preview here, so it almost certainly won't work on my system. However, I hope it works for those running a 32-bit copy of Windows 8. :)

It seems that a newer version of vmm.sys enables to run VPC 07 on Windows 8 x64, I'm downloading the Windows Phone SDK 7.1.1 update from MS in order to try it.

----> EDIT <----
So I got it running:
Image

Steps:
1.- Download VPC 07 setup and rename Setup.exe to whatever you like. (Otherwise Windows will block it)
2.- Install
3.- Go to %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Virtual PC and rename 'Virtual PC.exe' to whatever you like (Otherwise Windows will block it, again)
4.- Go to %systemroot%\system32 and locate vmm.sys (the folder should be 'Drivers' but it's language specific, in my case VPC is in spanish and the folder is 'Controladores')
5.- Replace VMM.sys with this one: http://1dl.us/Ff4
NOTE: Delete the old vmm.sys, don't just rename it to something like vmm.sys.old
6.- Reboot
7.- Profit!

EDIT 2:
The x86 version of the updated vmm.sys driver: http://1dl.us/Ff5, rename to vmm.sys .
NOTE: I've not tested this.

Thanks, I'll try it out on my own system, and see if it works. Now, if only I knew about this sooner, since it would have been really useful for me...

Yeah it works for x64 Windows 8. Thanks EPPM, I can power on VMs right now.

Actually just rename the old vmm.sys, put the modified vmm.sys in and reboot, and it should work.

For me, when I didn't deleted the old driver, I only got a BSOD so that's why I deleted it.

EPPM, the download link for the x64 version is down. Could you please upload the vmm.sys to another location?

http://virtuallyfun.superglobalmegacorp.com/?p=4035 suggests that another option is to run Virtual PC inside VMware (or maybe VirtualBox).

I renamed setup.exe to VirtualPC2007.exe and installation is working fine on my Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
My wanted stuff (original media):

Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2000 SP4 (aka SP1a)
