Where is Windows Update for Win98?
Where is Windows Update for Win98?
Today I installed Win98 on a VM and I'm unable to get the updates from Windows Update because the page refresh continuously. Did Microsoft closes also the updates for this OS?

OMG... Microsoft doesnt support 98 since 2006. You can download last unofficial SP2.1a from here http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS- ... Pack.shtml

But I remember that Windows Update was available the previous year. However thank you so much for the link, I found also the SP 2.1c v3 and I installed it successfully =)noxpire wrote:OMG... Microsoft doesnt support 98 since 2006.

Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
It was a website back in the late 90s-early 2000s and not an update system.
Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
It worked as of a couple months ago when I was running 98SE in vmware workstation. I'll have to try it out on my other machine later on and see if it loads.
Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
WU for 98 is long gone as well as all support for 9x platform (including ME).
The only WU that is still working , despite that the support ended for it as well is WIN 2000 Professional, where you need to manually update to IE 6 in order for WU to work

Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
Well for Windows ME it's the v4 of WinUpdate so I guess it's the same for 98..

95 - 3.5
98, 98 SE and ME - 4.0
2000, XP - 6.0
Vista and onwards have a build in app to do the work for ya. Not sure if those numbers are 100% correct, so don't hold me to it...

Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
Just tried my 98SE VM with IE6 and Windowsupdate.com results in an endless redirect loop. It shouldn't come as a surprise since 98 has been unsupported for quite some time now. Windows NT4 does the same thing, and so does Windows 95. Both have the latest version of IE available. Windows 2000 appears to be the oldest version of Windows that still works on Windowsupdate.com, but I didn't try ME.
Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
Nope ME not working also, as you said, hardly surprising
Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
PS: The Unnofficial Service Pack 2.1 have all updates for Windows 98.

Maybe they'll stopped to provide Windows update service nowadays, but I tried in Windows 95 last year and it worked!
Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
Well something got broke along the way. I know few people use these versions anymore, but how hard is it to keep old stuff up on your servers. From Microsoft's website it looks like anything older than XP has been erased or is hard to get to. When you look at the competition, Apple has stuff up for OS 9 and even an archive of older stuff. I'm not usually one to side with Apple, but it shouldn't be that hard for Microsoft to keep old stuff on their website. It doesn't need to be accessible from the main page, but they could at least keep old pages alive. I'm sure their servers could handle it just fine.

Nope it seems its broken it completely, checked from from my end already, not sure if the OP had any success, doubt it works for them either.
Totally agree with spunker though, how hard could it be!

Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
It's definitely broken. That's unfortunate. Considering what little resources they must actually use keeping it running you would image it would have just stayed up!
Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
I know it is a really old OS, but Microsoft should still keep updates available. Or at least release at the end of each product life cycle a "last version edition" that contains all the updates.
Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
Microsoft dont really wish to extend an out of support product, when there is a new version they can charge you for
But at the least like above a Update Rollup would be nice at the end of support, however there are always people who will create the packs unofficially.

Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
Well, since the Os's aren't supported, they won't really have new updates. Old updates are should be availible, just not automatically. I remember a long time ago reading about update rollups for older Windows...
I never really got to test WU though, cause net doesn't work for me on 98 VMWare...
All I know is that 2000 w/ IE6 worked, but that was a year ago when extended support hadn't ended. XP is updated too...

Microsoft wont do that. They are like all the other software companies now: "forced upgrading". Heck! the death of Windows XP isn't too far off either. I doubt they will support updates long after they finally get rid of it. Microsoft had it right in the beginning then they fouled it all up.
Re: Where is Windows Update for Win98?
There is a different between supporting an outdated OS and leaving a directory of old update files on your website. The files take some storage space on servers and a little bit of bandwidth when they are accessed, but I'm pretty sure a company like Microsoft can spare a bit of space for an update archive. They must keep them somewhere, probably not online, but it's hard for me to imagine they actually remove all traces of old files from their company.
