I can't get PC-DOS 1.00 or PC-DOS 1.10 working in any emulators or virtual machines. The disk images simply won't boot, and WinImage won't open them. Could you help?

I know original Disk Image of PC-DOS 1.00 / PC-DOS 1.10 works on PCE (IBM PC 5150) emulator.
I have no Virtual Machine or VMWARE.

But the SHA1 of Disk Image for PC-DOS 1.00 / 1.10 is same value with original.

I'll try to replicate the process.

just a question, can Bochs run PC DOS 1.x? it supports 160KB floppy disks.

Bochs is supposed to be able to run it. If not, try PCem.

Can't remember how I originally did it. This time I used VirtualBox with MS-DOS 6.22. Copied the image to the virtual C Drive and a program called img2dsk. I formatted a 3.5" HD floppy to 1.44 MB. Using img2dsk i copied the 160k image to the 1.44 disk. It boots up.
