Windows Neptune Server?

Post by linuxlove »

tonynoname is good for something it seems.

http://www.betaarchive.com/screenshots/ ... 111%20Sp4/
Is it possible that Neptune had both a client and a server SKU being developed?

Comparison pictures:

Neptune Server on the left, Neptune Client on the right
The Setup branding is a little bit different. Neptune Server identifies itself as "Neptune Server", while Neptune Client identifies itself as "Windows 2000 Professional".
Not shown here, a difference in the EULA can also be found.

Bootscreens. They speak for themselves.

The System Properties monitor is showing two different graphics. Neptune Server shows the multi-colored Neptune flag, while Neptune Client shows the traditional Windows flag.
Winver pictures are also different. And what's with Service Pack 4?

A difference in the Explorer graphic is shown. The mounted CDs also have different names.

Dunno. The system is registered to KenOath / Beta-Tester on both systems with the same AMD Athlon XP +2400...

it still doesn't mean he didn't modified it as a personal project
just like he does with action centers (no this is not any form of "attack")

just as in past people tried to make Neptune SP4 or Longhorn 3718 SP3
OS would still be "its version" just "updated" or SKU changed
maybe it was leaves...

I think Suumpmolk's right on this one. I do recall Ken making an SP4 "hack" of Neptune. It wouldn't surprise me if, for the sake of completeness, he changed the remaining 2k resources (such as those used for server) with custom-made replacements.

I think Neptune server is impossible since Neptune was HOME EDITION of windows 2000

technicaly is possible

win2000 didn't had Home edition as XP does
so some sort of conversion to whatever server edition might be possible
(I'm talking out of my ass as I never did editing with win2000)
maybe it was leaves...

It's not clear what Neptune was planned to become, but it was definitely not the home counterpart of W2k.

to me it seems pointless. To clear things out:
-NEPTUNE: Home version of Win2K
-ODYSSEY: Next bussines version of Windows - This one was to have a server edition, not Neptune. it's the most logical explanation (to me).

Just like the others said, someone was messing around with resources or at least modified the screens...

Well Neptune, since it was the Home Version of Win2k, it COULD be compared to Home Server, couldn't it have been?

So if it was the home version of W2k, why the different version number?

This comes direct from Ken Oath:

Yes this Neptune Server with service pack 4 is a made up ISO of mine, it installs
with zip folders, my own remade msconfig, working windows imaging aquisition,
unlike Neptunes normally broken WIA, tweakui, multi desktop, quickres for quick change
of screen resolution, hibernation by default as does the STD Neptune, & any STD system
defaults that I normally have to re-configure on a new install, like expanded control-
panel on the start menu, font smoothing, etc, etc, + new support tools, deploy, bootdisks
& any other text & graphics on the root directory of the CD...
ALL additions are fully integrated via the STD layout, txtsetup.sif, dosnet.inf & other
various STD inf files already present...

I did it as a challenge, seeing that others have tried combining 2000 Sp4 files with
Neptune, & partly or completely failed, I tend to take on any challenge that others
before me have tried & failed at, I learn a lot doing such, as would anyone who takes
on similar challenges, Plus, when I take on a challenge, I don't give up until I've
acheived my goals, unlike 99% of any other project that people seem to make posts
about, & very rarely if at all ever see the light of day...
I did this 2 years ago, I just didn't make a post about it as all my posting seems to
do is either attract trouble, or a spammed email or PM inbox, resulting in more trouble...

NO he is not.

By the way, Ken Oath has just given me some screen shots that indicate there was going to be a server edition of Windows Neptune: http://www.mediafire.com/?7q88uvajlww8u

Not to mention he released lots of builds in the past for nothing more than trouble for him.

I think lots of people just plain hate him, probably because of all the rare stuff he owns. I'll let him speak on that matter if he so chooses.

Correct. And now I'd like for this thread to be locked before it breaks out into another flame war over what KenOath has.

I never asked what he has, just assuming he has all the cool stuff, because he has screenshots of them. Just saying if I got one of those rare builds I would leak the same day I tested them.
