I disagree, the basic principle of ISP level manditory censorship is very authoritarian, government power to control and monitor individuals activites should be as little as possible.
It's a slippery slope, in this case extremely slippery, it's about 1 slip away from banning opposing parties webpages and blogs, and then rounding them up for public executions for betraying The Party.

There are ways of stopping this progression into facism, voting for the least evil party (leftest) is usually a good idea, there's also this:

That is the point I was trying to make. Whilst it has its good points in some cases, it can be used for other people to pursue their own agendas.

Most people voted for the squirmy little dork who eats his own earwax in parliament, because he made whole heap of stupid promises, few of which he has kept almost 1 year into his term.
But still, I get to say I told you so to a hell of a lot of people...

Also, it would be very hard to overthrow the government when very few of us own guns.

Politics, damned if you do, damned if you don't, its what you get when the richest people in the country get to tell the rest how to live.
Will Kevin Rudd be using this filtered internet? I think not.

And I'm still waiting for my world class broadband...

Time for my commie rant: Despite what governments would have you think, Democracy does not exist to serve the people, it exists merely as a way of enabling society to function without giving any single man (or woman) absolute power.

As far as I am concerned, all politicians are there to do the same thing. Lie through their back teeth and use their power to pursue their own agendas.

Pilot is going live:

Quote:
The first phase of the federal government's ISP filtering trial has been confirmed with an initial rollout to six participating ISPs.

"The initial round of ISPs are Primus Telecommunications, Tech 2U, Webshield, OMNIconnect, Netforce and Highway 1", said the announcement.

"Arrangements for the first phase of the live pilot have been finalised with six ISPs while consultations continue with a number of other ISPs that have applied to take part", it said.

I stared at the 5 other ISP's and laughed as I never have heard of them, other then that, I have no comments on this subject.

So yeah, this filters pretty much screwed. It's last hope is Optus, because Telstra won't do it.

Telstra = actually good for something! Think about it, in Australia theres over 19 million mobile phones - Telstra has about 9.5million of these services. Then add on the millions who bundle this with their internet, home phone and pay TV. All those possible guineapigs!

When Telstra won't pick up on something... you know it can't be good.
