I'd love to have a Wii and/or a PS3 to try that stuff, but... having one of these beats just for using them as a PC without doing any gaming is quite expensive...

But with the PS3 they allow you to install other operating systems. While with earlier consoles (and probably the Wii) you have to do some kind of modification

Yes, as I said, the PS3 can already run FC5.

but that kinda ruins the fun if you can pretty much just put the cd in and install (i know it is more than that), where on other consoles you have to do some modding which is more fun :D

Who said the PS3 would be limited to run Linux concerning "other OSes"? There are other (*nix) OSes that support the PowerPC architecture. I guess there would be some hacking required to get, say, FreeBSD running on a PS3. Something that would be of interest for me is: If you've got a PPC Linux on the PS3, can you run MOL and boot OS X? It would be a pain because you can realistically only give it ~128MB of RAM, but in theory, it should be possible.

Let's see what they get done with Linux on the Wii. If it works well, I might give it a try sometime (the Wii is significantly cheaper than a PS3).

I saw a video where someone ran Windows XP in QEMU on a PS3, so the OSX thing should be possible (XP looked did look very slow though, but then again it was in emulation). Would it ever be possible to get OSX running natively on the PS3 or is there a reason why that couldn't happen (it would surely be easier than OSX on generic PCs, as there's no TPM protection in PPC OSX, as long as the CPU isn't too different to the ones in Macs)?

AFAIK, the PS3 has a POWER CPU, not a PowerPC. These might be similar, but I'm not sure they're 100% identical. But even if OS X could boot on it, you would still need a boot loader, the kernel extensions for the hardware and other stuff. So, booting Linux and then running MOL would be easier. (For now). XP being slow on the PS3 is no surprise, an x86 CPU has to be completely emulated due to its lack in the PS3. :)

It would be very cool to have OSX on the PS3 though - imagine how much more a real Mac with that many CPU cores and a Blu-Ray drive would cost! What about the 360? Isn't that much more similar to the G5, but no-one seems to have tried doing much with it?

PowerPC is an implementation of the POWER architecture with a few extensions. Besides, the PS3 has a PowerPC with a few extensions, so OSX should run (CPU-wise). The bootloader won't have to be made from scratch, as the PPC BootX (the official OSX loader) is still open source. Hardware drivers could easily be ported from Linux, so OSX shouldn't have a hard time running on the PS3.

The PS3 uses the Cell processor, which, while based on the PowerPC, is quite different, and its extremely unlikely its compatible with PowerPC machine code. So I think it would be highly unlikely that OSX (or any other PPC-compiled OS) could run without some kind of emulation. It would need to be compiled for the Cell architecture. I am aware that at least one distro (Yellow Dog Linux?) does have a version for the PS3.

That said, I bought a Wii on launch day, so this looks rather interesting.

Fedora Core 5 runs on the PS3 and it's been compiled for PowerPC. All you have to do is apply some kernel patches and stuff like that. It's virtualised on the PS3, though.

I'd be quite interested to try one out, as it looks as though it could be quite good fun and there's nothing else really like it - wouldn't actually buy one though as it's expensive and I've got my PC for games
