The FX series graphics cards suck. They can sort of handle Aero, but not much else. But if thats what you want, I would go for the FX 5500, as it is much better.

The FX 5700 in my old laptop wasn't bad, Aero worked fine and games ran as well as they did under XP - it wouldn't play the latest games nowadays but is good for games a couple of years old. Make sure that you use the latest NVIDIA driver with a modified INF though, as for some reason NVIDIA stopped making Vista drivers for these around when Vista came out so if you use the latest official one you will have a very old (and buggy, as the NVIDIA Vista drivers were very bad back then) driver but the latest drivers work fine as long as you force them to install with a modified INF file. The 5xxx-series cards are the oldest ones that support Aero, or you could try an ATI 9700 or similar, I think Aero starts from around 9550 but it's worth checking that.

Also note that a x1650 Pro will actually play games in addition to Aero.

Aero requires Shader Model 2 or higher. So even Radeon 9500 will run it enough smoothly.

Might as well add that the chance that I'm going to play games on this is very little

It's only to replace the internal graphics and for Aero Glass...aaand thats about it :P

I had an FX5200 and it was terrible, not worth the bankpaper the money was printed on. I'd recommend an nVidia 6 or 7 series, the higher the second number of the four (eg: 6600GT) the better (and the 7 series is better than the 6 series, so a 7600 is better than a 6600GT).

My dad purchased an Ati x1600 Pro a few months back. Aero is like a cake walk for it. It can handle some games pretty well.

This card at Newegg is the Ati x1650 Pro (as already mentioned above). It is a step above the one my dad got, but alot better. With 512mbs of DDR2 onboard you can't go wrong...and for $75 you can't go wrong either!

I would just go with a 3450. Its a good budget card that can do Aero, and some newer games (albeit on low settings at a low res).
