Hello all,

I'd like to settle an argument I had with a friend today.

He had hold of a first aid book and quoted that if alone with an injured person, you should try resuscitation on them for 60 seconds before calling an ambulance (assuming the person was not breating of course).

I said you should call an ambulance first then attempt resuscitation since that 60 seconds difference in the ambulance getting to the scene could be the difference between the person living and not living.

What would you do (see the poll)? Bear in the mind that what he said was the guidelines set by a real ambulance crew in the book.

Girl or boy? 8-) :P

Also depends totally on the situation, but ambulance would probably be my choice.

Hmm, It would be a tough decision, but you'd have to try resuscitation for 60 seconds then call an ambulance.

The logic is that if they still aren't resuscitated for 60 seconds, there is probably little you can do anyway. Once you are into minutes with no breathing, permanent damage becomes a real risk, so I think you should try to resuscitate them as quickly as possible, leaving the ambulance until if there is absolutely nothing you can do.

Of course, In most situations, there will be more than just you nearby, so one person could call the ambulance while the other attempts to resuscitate the person.

You should first put an injured person in the correct position, then call an ambulance, then begin resuscitation until the ambulance arrives.

I learned to first call ambulance (thats what bystander is for)
Then start CPR.

Just my 2 cents.

Well since I'm actually legally senior first aid qualified in Australia, its

DRABCD

D - Danger, check for danger to you or the victim
R - Response - If there is no response, help is needed ASAP, only call <emergency> if someone else is available to do so
A - Airway, check if its blocked
B - Breathing, this is where you check if they are breathing and then call <emergency>
C - CPR, start doing it
D - Defribrillation, bascially those big machines that put out electricity into you and restart your heart

So if you are alone, check for foreign material in the airway and check if they're breathing, THEN call emergency services.
If you're with someone else they need to call when there is no response

I suppose it really depends on the situation, but I'd probably call the ambulance first.

On a lighter note, this reminded me of a sketch from the british TV show Bottom.... "quick, get the ambulance!" "we haven't got an ambulance!" :P

Im just doing the first aid thingy. If you see someone after an car accident /whatever you go to him, check if he can talk, if not you call for help (not by phone, just someone else, who could call the ambulance) then you check he he breaths. If he does, bring him into the recovery position, then you check if someone has called the ambulance, if not you should do that. If he does not breath, call the ambulance before you do anything and then make 30 cardiac massages and 2 rescue breathings, then again the cardiac massages and so on, till the ambulance arives. If the person starts breathing norma, then get him into the recovery position.

--> Therefor you cant say of first ambulance and then first aid or first first aid and then ambulance.... :P

edit: happy dudes DRABCD sounds fairly like that what we have learned. :P

I'd call an ambulance first, because it's been a long time since I learned CPR.

I would probably end up plowing air into their stomach.
