I decided to try out some Windows longhorn build that has been recently leaked on the FTP, and decided to install 4039 Lab06 n.030824-1954 by upgrading from 4029 (the recently leaked Lab06 n version) and setup went fine until it hung up at this point:

It's been 10 minutes since I let it sit, and no progress... Am I supposed to wait longer or do I have to go about installing it by alternate methods?

Do not bother upgrading from a previous build at this point. I have tested, almost all builds past 4029 requires to be clean installed or it hangs at that point while upgrading.

Huh? Interesting, what could be the cause for builds past 4029 to hang if an upgrade attempt is performed? I would like to know why...

I myself could never get this build to clean install or upgrade in VMWare 7.1.
On a clean install after 24 hours of continuous running it would get about 80% and throw off "Error copying files."
Upgrading, well OP has the same thing.

Don't know if this was fixed in newer VMWare, but rather than try fidgeting around I just dual-boot installed it on period-correct hardware and moved on.

As for the upgrade issue, Longhorn attempts to figure out what registry settings, programs, drivers etc. and changes the imaged install. In this case, the "applying migration settings" is where it figures out what and how to change the install. So, there is very well a hang because it probably silently ran into an exception and just tried to loop to attempt to fix it.
This is why I advocate against upgrading. It's not reliable. And the methods changed between builds.

Pretty much if there isn't disk activity (got to keep watching that indicator) call it quits.

I remember trying 4039 on an actual PC, about the time Windows 7 RTM'd.

It works on a real PC if you're upgrading from XP. Mine worked in doing a upgrade, on a 945 chipset based Gigabyte board.
