Links: Useful abandonware and beta resources

Post by mrpijey »

This forum thread collects good and useful resources for beta and abandonware researchers.

If you think a particular site should be here please post it in the thread along with a brief description of what it contains and I will evaluate and add it to the list if approved. Keep the thread clean from discussion as I will purge link suggestions after they have been processed. Please don't post irrelevant links or generic links to sites that serve no direct purpose. Any spam links will be removed and the poster will be warned for spamming. Any linking to sites with offending and prohibited content is strictly forbidden.

Important: None of these sites are affiliated with BetaArchive and its content may change at any time without notice. Any errors found on these sites should be reported to the respective site administrators and not here.

Yes, linking internal BA resources is pointless here since we have the general guide.

These sites are good places to find lots of old shareware/freeware software and drivers, I've found lots of stuff on these sites over the years:

http://cd.textfiles.com/ - dumps of lots of 1990s "shovelware" CDs, it's a lot easier to find things here if you already know what filename you're looking for, otherwise you have to find each CD's file listing file(s) and search them; some of the CDs are available as .isos on https://archive.org/
http://files.mpoli.fi/ - Metropoli BBS; capture available at https://archive.org/details/files.mpoli.fi.2013.04

I found a site where they dump and preserve the crc32, md5, size, track record and primary volume descriptor (pvd) of various disc images of mainly console games. They don't, however, host the actual images themselves. It's more like a checksum database and a fraction of the images aren't beta or abandonware (yet). The site url is redump.org.

redump.org is quite known among collectors and I got their whole set, but their MD5's are only useful for their dumps and their way of dumping it so it's one database of hashes among many other databases of the same games. But if you're a collector and need to verify against something then redump.org is a good database to check against.

longhorn.ms, win1.krnl386.com, winhistory.de, windows-nation.de (archive.org) and for many very specialized questions, Google Groups.
