Whats the processor?
If its a P3 or higher, I'd just stick XP on it.

Install Windows XP. On that system you would NOT gain performance from Windows 2000

I noticed that alot more buinesses/schools are using xp pro now, unlike two years ago, schools are buying computers with 2000 pro instead of xp.
A bit offtopic, but its 1 post:
Here at ''work'' we have a few types of computers, were running windows 2000/XP dualboot, and windows 2000 was ONLY for Office 2000, now we dont give office 2000 classes anymore and all are now office 2003, so i have te reinstall all pc's (of course not all, because i use a ghost image), with only XP.
We had Restore CD for the Compaq Evo D310 and also for the HP Compaq D530.
I had to find drivers for an AcerPower PC and Compaq Evo D510.
(wich were not hard to find).
And my school (is next door, were in the same building, all computer were from them, but they have locked them down, only to boot from Network and HD, i had to wipe the BIOS to boot them from floppy, CD, but the wipe didnt wipe out the BIOS password and the school is not giving the BIOS password free, but it works so its fine), were windows 2000 computers, but they have upgraded (there trowing out the HPQ D530 and QD510 to Dell wich Core 2 Duo) and are now upgrading to XP (finally).
They give you the classic windows, but i can still be changed to XP, they havent locked that option down yet).

Keep in mind licensing costs. Businesses and schools /never/ use TPB, and they can most of the time easily run the apps they need on 2k.
My elementary school got a bunch of P4s in ~2002, but they didn't upgrade them to Windows XP until after I had graduated.

Thats be cause the System Administrator has set an Domain Policy, in that policy the System Administrator can set anything to non-usable or usable (It has many options, like do not use registery or CMD.exe),
and your account that you use is also limited to not change important system files and install programs.
For performance, use nLite to make a modified build of XP. It strips away any parts of the system not needed, by not installing a lot of the cruft, and disabling services en masse. What I've left is pretty much DirectX and the networking stacks. All one needs for gaming with 390MB HD and 40MB of RAM used You could do it yourself using nLite (http://www.nliteos.com/), but it just so happens that someone already did the work and published it under the name TinyXP.
I've always 'felt' that Windows 2000 was faster than a base XP on my system. I have absolutely no benchmarks or quantitative data to back that up, mind. Maybe it's the relative lack of RAM on my PC. Maybe it's the psychological effect of that fisher-price interface.
And your schools are all relative rich-kids We're on 'Vista capable' Celerons running Windows 2000 at college
