Windows XP .dll files modification

Post by squidward_ »

How many files approximately would I need to edit using Resource Hacker in Windows XP to get most the icons looking like Windows Vista, without installing Vista Transformation pack? I know the main files I need to edit such as shell32.dll. The reason for this is, when SP3 for XP is released, I will download and slipstream it into my Windows XP Pro SP2 disc, then expand the files, replace the icons so that they look Vista-like, then use makecab to compress them and put the files into the i386 folder, overwritting the originals, so that when I install Windows XP, I can install it precustomized and maybe even share the customizations with you guys depending on how creative I am.

Note that each control panel typically has its icon in the .cpl file for it in the system32 folder, and there are also some more icons in xpsp2res.dll eg the little security shield icons. Also I would not recommend changing msgina.dll, I tried to replace that Windows 95 icon that is on XP's Shut Down dialog (the one you see with the Welcome Screen disabled) once and it screwed everything up.

You can customize more of 300 files for XP.
There are other applications, not only VTP, but also vistapack or V'iso to customize the xp image so you can setup an XP Vista Style and not a setup on XP!
