Hey BetaArchive!

I recently installed Memphis Build 1351 and tried to install VMware Tools (Workstation 12 Player) on it, only to display this message:
Quote:
Setup was unable to upgrade the Windows Installer.

Is this a common error, or is something wrong with VMware?

Try using either an older version of the VMware tools or the Graphics Card Driver Pack and the Audio Driver separately (They can be found in The Collection Book).

or don't use VMware at all for win9x betas. (Memphis betas have that annoying hsflop.pdr problem after setup and prevents them from working). Instead, use PCem (the latest binary from Battler).

If you're talking about the RSOD, I bypassed it. It RSODs me 4 times before 1 BSOD. Then the reboot, then it asks if you would like to bypass the error!

Haven't experienced that in Memphis yet. Just 95.

PCem currently doesn't support booting from the CD. Try using a boot disk. You can find one in this link. I recommend using a Windows 95B Boot Disk.

It does. Just check in BIOS if CD is the first boot option.

I will try that, ovctvct. I'll let you all know if it works!

Edit: Well, there goes that... :(
Code:
Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM : Failure ...
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

I'm using ASUS P/I-P55T2P4 - Pentium MMX 233 on PCem 10.1

I you are still wondering I tried an old version of VMWare tools on Neptune and it worked fine. I think it was version 7. There was a page somewhere with a list of downloads for the old versions but I no longer know where...

Karzahni - You're talking about NepTune. If you look at the title, it says "VMware Tools and Memphis 1351
So bringing something up involving a NT OS won't help, as Memphis is 9x/DOS.

Yes, but I was pretty sure that list I was referring to contained versions of VMware tools that should be compatible with pre-update/patch versions of Windows 9x.

Just a thought as I'm no familiar with compatibility with Betas:
The error message in the first post is related to Windows Installer.

Wouldn't installing a (newer) version of Windows Installer work? (not sure if Memphis comes with a version pre-installed)
I mean, if VMWare says their Tools are compatible with the final version of that OS (ie. 98 in this case), I'd assume they used a Windows Installer version that is compatible with that OS.

Again, just a thought.

I believe the problem was that the RTMs all had patches for adding MSI support. I think I tried one on a 98 beta and it failed. That's why the installer I used for Neptune should work on anything from Chicago to Whistler because I don't believe it uses MSI.

So you're saying that you installed the MSI in Neptune to 9x OSes?

No I believe the older VMware tools packages do not use MSI.

Yeah, as 9x was basically "Windows Setup" or other things. But, VMware Tools 7? Most likely an MSI.
