Pakistan blocks YouTube website
Quote:
Pakistan has blocked access to the popular YouTube website because of content deemed offensive to Islam.
Its telecommunications authority ordered internet service providers to block the site until further notice.
Reports said the content included Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad that have outraged many.
But one report said a trailer for a forthcoming film by Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders, which portrays Islam in a negative light, was behind the ban.
"They asked us to ban it immediately... and the order says the ban will continue until further notice," said Wahaj-us-Siraj, convener of the Association of Pakistan Internet Service Providers.
"Users are quite upset. They're screaming at ISPs which can't do anything.
"The government has valid reason for that, but they have to find a better way of doing it. If we continue blocking popular websites, people will stop using the internet."
Other countries that have temporarily blocked access to YouTube include Turkey and Thailand.
Has anyone noticed its also down for the UK as well? Everyone from the UK I've asked on my MSN list has also confirmed this.

It just seems to be timing out for me at the moment too - it it working for people outside the UK then do you know?
It appears to work for France and Sweden for definite, however it won't work on the BA server, hosted in France... Possibly because I've changed everything to UK settings.

That means that some other country's as well can experience not working website.
I don't think the UK would block it though, freedom of speech here might be less than it used to be but I don't think they'd go as far as blocking websites like YouTube - seems a bit of a mystery why it was inaccessible earlier tonight.
It's been reported in the news that this problem was related to the Pakistan thing, and from the reports it sounds as though it wasn't confined to the UK.
Youtube is blocked trought a /24 BGP announce.
This announce was leaked to upstream ISP and was broadcasted to nearly all ISP.
If your ISP doesn't filter correctly BGP announce, no youtube for you
Internet is very easy to broke when you have an ASN ...
And if you aren't a Tier1 Operator, you cannot avoid it ...
