Toshiba stops HD-DVD production

Post by Ludacris »

Toshiba has finally decided to pull the plug on HD DVD, ending the Hi Def format war. They haven't officially announced it yet, but a Japanese website and an unnamed company source have confirmed it. Toshiba will lose "hundreds of millions of US dollars", but their HD DVD format was going nowhere fast. Two major companies have announced support of Blu-Ray this year, with many others having been behind the winning format earlier. However, the Japanese website, NHK, reports that HD DVD products will still be available for a while. There just won't be any further development. An official announcement from Toshiba is expected next week.

That is why I thought that HD-DVD would win. BluRay does not want to publish porn...

Actually the BluRay no-porn thing was a misunderstanding, but it was enough that most of the porn industry sided with HD-DVD, porn is big but not quite big enough that they outrank all the major studios. The porno industry will probably go with BluRay if there aren't any HD-DVD players on the market.

Well more and more companies started siding with BluRay so this was going to happen. Porn will eventually get released on BluRay because there won't be any HD-DVD support.

japanese people must be horny
blu-ray would be hacked if they don't allow porn, so there is no sense to stop it

Blu-Ray still hasn't won over the traditional DVD format yet, though. I can hardly see this as a victory for the Blu-Ray camp.

Only when DVDs disappear entirely will I consider a Blu-Ray player. Until then, it's DVDs FTW!

^^ true i can only wonder what will happen with the Xbox's hd-dvd's and what will M$ have to do, in order to get blu-ray into the xbox360, to stay competitive....

heck! would Sony even give them the rights?

looks like it may be tough for 360 owners...
