Ultrasound is a monitoring and troubleshooting tool for the File Replication service (FRS). FRS is used to replicate files and folders in the SYSVOL file share on domain controllers and files in Distributed File System (DFS) targets. Ultrasound is a powerful tool to measure the health of FRS replica sets by providing health ratings and historical information about replica sets. Ultrasound also allows administrators to monitor the progress of replication and detect problems that can cause replication to become backlogged or stopped.

Applicable Builds

Monitor NTFRS running on: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and above; Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2; Windows Server 2008;

Ultrasound Console: can also be installed on Windows XP apart from supported operating systems listed above.

Please submit all bugs via the MBC and preface the title with “Ultrasound:”

Please post any questions in the Feature Focus NG.

Test Scenarios

1. Install Ultrasound in an existing deployment of FRS replica sets (where FRS is used for replication of the contents of DFS link targets). Use SQL Server 2005 as the database for storing information about the monitored replica sets. Ensure existing Ultrasound functionality is working fine.

2. Install Ultrasound and use it for monitoring domain controllers using FRS for replication of the contents of SYSVOL. Ensure that things work fine.

3. Use Ultrasound to monitor Windows Server 2008 machines which are replicating FRS replica sets. Ensure that Ultrasound’s WMI provider is able to install fine on these machines. Verify that Ultrasound is able to monitor FRS running on Windows Server 2008 machines.
