Nice! Is that the one with the female Spellsword? Or the one with an underpowered level 4 (or something) character?

Anyway, that's a great find :)

This should be the build with the 16th level female Spellsword. The other one was a beta of the demo, if that makes sense. It was only available online and was supposed to be on CD as well. :)

I just got a message. The part where it was unsure if I get the files at all is over and now we just gotta wait. My contact couldn't rip it himself, because he wasn't home, so his mom had to do it. Therefore we don't have an iso, but a pure file copy of the disc. But that's better than nothing, I guess.

Got the files. They are from October 1995!
And yes, it's the lvl16 Female Spellsword demo.
Here's the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByRZMK ... sp=sharing
as part of my beta download folder:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing

Seems like one of the ingame options turns off monsters, so you can explore the dungeons entirely. [EDIT]Or not? Somehow first the entire dungeon was empty, but after like 10 minutes, suddenly a Skeleton Mage spawned and insta killed me.

You can use a debug mouse view by holding shift. Your head will remain rotated against your body when you do that, so make sure you rotate back afterwards, so your controls don't get messed up.

If your mouse is locked after starting the demo and automatically presses the exit button, you can run setsound.exe before starting the demo. This will somehow unlock the mouse and the demo will work fine.

Comparison of Arena2 folder content between Female Spellsword demo and regular 1995er demo:
http://kultcds.com/Upload/dagdemocomp.html
And the content of Arch3d.BSA:
http://kultcds.com/Upload/dagdemoarch.html
Left is regular,
Right is Female Spellsword.

You can see there that the demo contains piles of old texture sets and such.
The readme features an additonal paragraph:
Quote:
The final version of the game will include features
to improve performance on slower computers or those with
only 8MB of RAM. This demo does not. If you have only 8MB
of RAM, Bethesda Softworks recommends that you do not run
a disk caching program, such as Smartdrive, or any other
TSR software that uses extended memory. If your computer
has more than 8MB of RAM, a disk caching program like
Smartdrive will significantly improve performance.

There is a text file that references the editor:
Code:
Here are some of my first efforts with the house builder
They include, a Mages guild, a tavern, a shop, and a temple.
My buildings start the the prefix, "jr", my initials. Then comes the
description of what the building is. I'm sure you can figure that out.

Note that not all the buildings have markers added - I wanted to wait until
we get the final version of the house editor to do that.

Shop - Fairly small, good combination of walls and prefabs

Tavern - Again, pretty simple.

Temple - Really fun to make and roof. Has a multi-level roof, some roofing
on the 3rd level, and some on the 2nd. It took me a while to figure out
Note that the prefab with the portal has a misplaced door in the icon.

Mage's Guild - Completely constructed using walls and such. I know it's
probably too complicated for the eventual use in Daggerfall, and will
probably choke the computers for those of you without Pentiums, but I
think it's really cool looking. Looks almost castle like from the outside.

Remember, use the "r" key to make sure all floors are being rendered for
the outside.

Let me know what you all think.

                               Jeremy the handle-less

The chat meno (alt+q) has an option "Generate Songs" that prints (or something similar, as each session has its own names) this on the screen:
Quote:
Bargain Gemcutter
The Bank of Tulune
The Odd Jewelry
First Class Remedies
The Emperor's Apparel
The Conservatory of Raen
The Red Rascal
placetype 4
Mages Guild
The Emperor's Trading Post

(Tulune happens to be region that you are in in the demo, when you let the cheat menu diplay your region)

Close to the cheat menu in exe, there is a reference to a file named sonnets.txt.
Correct me if my conclusion is wrong, but it seems like Daggerfall was intended to have a system that generates (or displays) songs or poems (even though the titles are only place names in this draft) oO
Said file sonnets.txt can actually be found in the demo's main folder and it gets created when you let the game generate songs:
Quote:
Sonnet to True Love (11232)

To love is naught but a crime
Perhaps my song fills thee with disgust
To die, alas, in ones prime
To the bright sky winged birds do thrust
To die, alas, in ones prime
To the bright sky winged birds do thrust
Work me hardier than a gnome
When will thou come home?

Farewell Devotion (23325)

Cannot thou see what a merry wreck
Sweet juice from berry squeezed
I'm sick, and very, very sick
My love cajoles, my love doth tease
My heart to love's hot fire freeze
O Notorgo, make my message fleet
Sweet juice from berry squeezed
Against such odds, dare we compete?
Rain is aplenty in the month of First Seed
Ah, to me don't be mean
Eat good food and drink fine mead
Thy black heart be clean
Ding, Ding, Dell
A mad wizard's spell

Oh Love (121)

I'm thy king, be my queen
The ways of love be foul
The ways of love be foul
Spring, spring, so lovely green
O where have you been?
Into the wind, must I howl?
The ways of love be foul
O, she likes to be seen
On moonlight and stars, lovers do swear
She wore a lovely, lovely gown
The sea doth spray and foam
O goddess Mara, acknowledge my prayer!
Across bonny dell, across bonny town
A house that is not a home

On the Subject of Lovers (6493)

O where have you been?
Spring, spring, so lovely green
The sword in the scabbard doth rust
Her face was fair and round her bust
The knives edge is keen

I Sing of Desire (31555)

Let me sharpen my skean
Eat good food and drink fine mead
What a remarkable scene!
Thou noblest specie, thou finest breed
You look to me with true disdain
They say thou art elegant
I can see through thy legerdemain
An actor filled with his talent
My house is built brick by brick
Like children, in gold fields we play
I'm sick, and very, very sick
Thy hair night-black, thy eyes bright as day
Conditions that I find appalling
When the green leaves were a-falling

Ode to Desire (3481)

She a High Elf, He Nordic
Conditions that I find appalling
I'm sick, and very, very sick
When the green leaves were a-falling
Is this all a merry trick?
My love will come a-calling
My house is built brick by brick
My house is built brick by brick

Farewell Ardor (29584)

Follow, dear, the path I lead
The hog doth nuzzle with his sow
Foul laws of men doth true love impede
In the fields, the slave doth plough
O'er the stream, lush flowerful bough
Throw your arms around my neck
She shall curtsey and he shall bow
My waist is a-growing thick
Is this all a merry trick?
That is what I find most galling
She a High Elf, He Nordic
Conditions that I find appalling
In my heart a tyrant doth reign
You look to me with true disdain

Ode to Yearning (16433)

Thou paineth me of jealous spite
To be strong, my love, thou must adjust
Walketh thou in beauty like the night
The sword in the scabbard doth rust
The sword in the scabbard doth rust
Let me lick where bees doth lick
Perhaps my song fills thee with disgust
The mother hen and her chick
Is this all a merry trick?
O where have you been?
Show me how you do that trick
Ah, to me don't be mean
Thou may find thou gets what thou need
Thou may find thou gets what thou need

Ode to Love (26173)

The beginning comes closest to the end
Your honor, know thee I will defend
Thus sang the uncouth swain
Thou left me standing in the rain
Into the wind, must I howl?
The ways of love be foul
Flowers you pluck to make your bouquet
A thousand wasted hours every day

Blame Only True Love (26391)

Perhaps, dear, I misunderstood
Come, my love, lets gallivant!
The clouds look like a gray shroud
An actor filled with his talent
He was a brave gallant
The stem, petals, and bud
Like a babe in the wood

Blame Only Love (28913)

Her love she wished to please
If thou likes, thou may call it lust
Reach with thy white hands out to me
See thee that knight, strong and robust?
My love cajoles, my love doth tease
No law against love can be just
Add one to us, love, and make three
All follow this, and come to dust

Oh Love (11259)

They all rave and rant
Blow, blow, thou winter breeze
O'er the stream, lush flowerful bough
Sing me again love's sweet reprise
They say thou art elegant
Sing me again love's sweet reprise
Swear not, my love, a sacred vow
The Gods we are careful to appease

My True Love (11360)

Come, my love, lets gallivant!
He was a brave gallant
He was a brave gallant
He was a brave gallant
They say thou art elegant
My love to thee I do sadly declare
So sure, so calm and confidant
Bathed in sunlight, sunlight to wear
I remember that melancholy affair

Love Sonnet to Love (24854)

I'm sick, and very, very sick
Upon the tree was a wise owl
Let me lick where bees doth lick
At night, the daedra dark doth prowl
Give the old dog a merry kick
The ways of love be foul
O goddess Mara, acknowledge my prayer!
Such boldness of passion do I dare

Sweetest Desire (29562)

Across bonny dell, across bonny town
Diamonds sparkled in his crown
I am free, my love, art thou?
Strange, I want to be with thou.
Down in the sea we all drown

My Thoughts on Love (7810)

Come, my love, lets gallivant!
My heart to love's hot fire freeze
My love cajoles, my love doth tease
Come, my love, lets gallivant!
So sure, so calm and confidant
Her love she wished to please
Sing me again love's sweet reprise
Be not, my friend, a syncophant!

My Lovers (22706)

My darling, beside me please stay!
What price for love we fools do pay!
Flowers you pluck to make your bouquet
A thousand wasted hours every day
Now let us sport while we may
Elect me to the guards elite
Thy hair night-black, thy eyes bright as day
From such a sight I can't retreat
Thy hair, lush and brown, like Breton wheat
My sweetest love, must I repeat?
Elect me to the guards elite
Arkay, cruel fate thee must mete
Ding, dong, dell
Upon the beach, I find a shell

Forget Not Love (963)

She shall curtsey and he shall bow
In the valley, hear the sheep sad bleat
Merrily, merrily shall I live now
Then come and kiss me, twenty and sweet
Don't ask me, love, to be discreet
Into the wind, must I howl?
Around her face she wore a cowl

Sonnet to My Mistress (29507)

To a spring dawn, I would not compare
Nothing more than Free's clown
Across bonny dell, across bonny town
My darling love, let the buyer beware
Sunshine in Mid Year shines your hair
Diamonds sparkled in his crown
Her eyes were blue, her cheek so brown
Such boldness of passion do I dare
But never would I thee compel
I bid thee then a fond farewell
She lay like in a deathless spell
I scream, I shout, I squeal, I yell
The tide it ebbs, the tide doth swell
Like an angel, she fell

Sonnet to Yearning (15426)

In the fields, the slave doth plough
Swear not, my love, a sacred vow
Against such odds, dare we compete?
Against such odds, dare we compete?
In the fields, the slave doth plough
I am free, my love, art thou?
Sunshine in Mid Year shines your hair
To a spring dawn, I would not compare

It is possible to become a "Werething" or a Vampire if you fill in the missing files (some of which aren't even in the retail version, so I just renamed some others).
Entering the Tavern makes the game crash. If you filled in the missing files, the game will freeze instead.

The demo also contains a Climate.pak that's different from the retail version:

Creature name changes between the demos:
[Old -> New]
Underking -> Ancient Lich [Comment by Hallfiry: would be weird if he could be a regular encounter]
ice atronach -> ice atfghfgh [Comment by Hallfiry: seriously?!]
dreugh -> Dreugh [Comment by Hallfiry: just a little spelling fix]

Found another difference:
The hand-to-hand Combat graphics are different:
Old:

New (tested in old demo with files from the new demo):

Seems like Eadwyre and Barenziah knighted someone:

([EDIT:]The newer demo has these in higher resolution)

The political scene at the iliac bay changed a bit, too:

Thanks for the demo, this is great! One of the .XMI midi files in the ARENA2 folder also appear to be different to retail or not in the final game. The file is WALKING.XMI, it sounds pretty weird for Daggerfall.

I wouldn't be me, if I didn't come up with such stuff from time to time, right?
In the meantime: I'll take a step back from that demo for this week (I thik I did enough already as you can see in the long post above), as I have some important exams coming up.

In other news, I'll receive the boxed Warcraft 1 shareware version today or tomorrow. The box promises 40mb of videos, which is kinda weird considering that if you take 6 videos, each with 1,5mb as the retail version has and the entire data.war file, you still end up with only 20mb. So... some surprises coming up there.

Hey, I think you mentioned the boxed shareware version of Warcraft some time ago, but I was too distracted by the release date for the Warcraft II shareware so I didn't pay proper attention... because the shareware CD of Warcraft is, well, an entirely new thing to me :)

Played the demo a bit. The differences that I've noticed so far is that the chasm with the wooden suspended bridge is not flooded with water (this was mentioned earlier here in the thread though IIRC), and also the dungeon seems to have much less detail on the whole - most rooms are empty except for a few possible sprite props here and there. (Most architecture however has remained unchanged in the final release of the game.)

Also the Skeletal Warrior sprite is different, as it doesn't have a shield and is armed with a sword instead of an axe. I'm not sure if it is the same or different as in the male Spellsword demo.

[Edit] There are also enchanted items in this version. They are displayed with a green background on the inventory screen, similar to quest items in the final game.

[Edit 2] I changed the gender variable in Z.CFG, and unlike the male Spellsword demo, the clothed body image is not forced, so you can play as a male character as well (the name will remain the same though):
Image

Another curious thing is that after I changed the character back to female, I found an enchanted male clothes item, and couldn't put it on:
Image

I think it's some kind of intentional logic that clothes of different gender than that of the player could be found (to be sold or used as magic items), but not worn. This logic is not preserved in the final version of the game.

This version of the demo also has bows. There doesn't seem to be a limit to arrows, but still multiple arrow items can be found in the dungeon.

The name is hardcoded in the EXE. The class is loaded from the class templates. You can actually change what class you are playing in the demo.

We should probably investigate also what models are different in Arch3D.bsa and from what stage some of the textures are.

Not sure if I posted that before, but the dungeon shown in the CES trailer was used for later screenshots with altered textures (and some bonus clutter):

I've noticed that they apparently did very little editing of dungeon architecture - at least, of generic dungeon blocs for random dungeons - after the early public versions.

One thing about bot 0.1 demo versions which seems to have not been brought up yet: there are random props, that is, some of the decoration sprites change every time you restart the dungeon. Not sure if this ever happens in the retail game.

Suddenly I remembered a weird place I encountered in some dungeon (either in the full game or in the Betony demo) - I can't be sure if there is a similar place in the 0.1 demo. It's a large dungeon hall that contains what seem to be farm buildings, a fenced pigsty/cattle herding area, and one or two doors which say "This house has nothing of value" if you try to open them. Could this somehow be related to some early town building design experiments?

The kind of dungeon area I'm talking about is referenced here:
Quote:
While playing Daggerfall, I have noticed that every once and a while there are houses inside of dungeons. The "house" is simply a door on a wall (like any other door you would come across while exploring a dungeon), except when you try to open the door you get the "This house has nothing of value" message that pops up when you try to enter many above-ground town houses. This has happened to me twice while playing, both times in random dungeons. The dungeon area around this "house" in both cases had random cows, hay piles, and fences that you would normally expect to see above ground.

I've just watched the Daggerfall trailer, and it has some screenshots that are apparently not available elsewhere on the net these days. Since there are no Daggerfall websites that would archive this kind of materials (except maybe the UESP Wiki which only has the DFGIFS.ZIP preview pack), I decided to look up the indexed CDs for the names of screenshots that were preserved by the Wayback Machine.

And you know what, some files are indeed found on a certain CD :) PC Collector CD HS 3_2 has the shots from the dates of Nov 22, 1995 and Dec 13, 1995. Other filenames have yielded no matches though.

I put these on UESP already a few weeks ago:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Old ... d_Previews

I'm seemingly the only person who bothers filling that page on UESP with the missing images.

You can add dag_pi04.gif if you want:

Great! :)

On another note, I've just realised that there are apparently quite a few discarded player character faces that did not make it into the final release. This shot has some female Nord faces that IIRC are not present in the full version (for some reason there are two identical faces in the final release's female Nord set).

It would more than likely however require dummy files, but it'd get us a form of a more feature complete pre-release Daggerfall. ;)

Totally ignored that post back in the days.

Now that we have the lvl 16 female spellsword demo, we have a lot more old content than before. So we might actually be able to stich together such a Frankenstein version.

How about calling it Frankenfall? :D
(actually I live like 1km away from the border to Franken aka Franconia)

I've just discovered that TEXT.RSC from the final version also has the strings to generate sonnets. Apparently there are several sets of rhymed lines, and the programme assembles texts by randomly combining those lines according to sonnet rhyme patterns. Titles are also randomly generated from two parts ("Ode to..."/"Springtide of..."/etc. + "Love"/"Passion"/etc.). No idea how to activate that function in the full game, but it's cool.

TEXT.RSC also contains title parts for heroic and/or bawdy sonnets, not just those about love, but I can't be sure if there are specific lines for them.

It's the regular demo from Valentine's Day 1994. They are identical.

Wait wait wait wait wait!
The REGULAR demo is from 17 Feb, not 14 Feb! (Still the two demos that Flibble wanted to be compared, are still identical)
History has to be rewritten. (Means I'll have to upload 2 demos instead of one *hehe* )

All versions is uncracked - need spell cost for exit from the prison dungeon. This is avaliable in many places and works with all versions.

Did anyone happen to archive these files? I'm looking for an original release backup either in disk image or iso and it's getting increasingly difficult to find anything prior to 1.07 Deluxe.

I found the version that Awooo uploaded 3 years ago:

My mediafire account was banned for this versions of Arena without any chances to unban.

But I save all of it by Arena. (but not other, which was on mediafire)

Thanks for posting them again. I might put them on my games page later today.

Thanks for the re-upload, Dofer ;)

I have a question about the scene releases, the files do not contain the crucial game data, such as GLOBAL.BSA and I don't know how to install the game because it needs to be done from a floppy. The version I'm trying is the earliest 31.01.1994 (TRSI) release. Does anyone know how to install it?

All the files in the TRSi version which I put up before are dated to 7th march and the GLOBAL.BSA is there, but my version is clearly a later repack.

Thank all of you very much for the thorough research. Thank you Hallfiry for noting how Bethesda disgraced itself with the superfluous nudity & such. However, time goes by and many of the links work no more. Could these be refreshed?
It would be interesting if the source code for, or (inclusive) a precise discussion on the renderers involved were to be published.

I assume I can speak for all of us when I say: You're welcome.

Did I do that? I assume that was in the Arena making of. I think MrFlibble made some comments about Daggerfall's nudity and undies.
Also I must note that I didn't explicitely discuss the type/gender/preference/etc. specific details of the sex-sells part. I could have gone into more detail there, but I simply sent people over to another website to save time, because some feminist or so already discussed the cover.

I'll upload everything I find on my HDD to my games page tomorrow (including the files I already promised to upload a while ago)

Source code of Daggerfall is lost, afaik. Arena source might be still around, but I donÄt thinkwe can gain much knowledge from it. Arena didn't use many renders iirc and Daggerfall uses actual 3D models for most things. Sprite renders in Daggerfall were shortly mentioned in an interview in 1995 and I wrote about them here:
http://tcrf.net/Proto:The_Elder_Scrolls ... _1995_Demo
(especially the tiger part)
Not much info, I know, but more than nothing ;)

Most Arena stuff should be up now:

If you think something should be added, feel free to tell me.

I've trawled the internet a bit for information on battlespire, there is quite a bit of old data left in its bsa files, including what seems to be the original archiver (arch3.exe) and a bunch of old levels.
Haven't figured out how to decompress files yet though, Hallfiry said it was LZW but that doesn't seem to match what i have (data is byte aligned, but lzw requires 9 bit or larger codes or more).

Which version of battlespire is in the ftp? Looking around for 1.0. Have 1.2 and the 1.5 patch is everywhere.
