Outage

Post by Andy »

Hello all,

Im unsure what has caused the outage earlier but after more than 3 reboots the server would not come back up or respond to ping. A technician has been working on the server, and it appears to be OK now.

Personally I am blaming the NIC problem again, which appears to have resurfaced. I'll be keeping my eye on the server a lot more for a few days.

I'm with you on that one, what's their reasoning for not looking into it then?

"Update the driver, it will be fine then"

I have, twice. I will be ringing them up if it does it again.

Problems have resurfaced again so I've got a techy working on it again. Trying to get him to replace the NIC but he's trying to get around that. The server is fine, but the connection keeps going down for minutes at a time.

No its a hardware issue.

Pinging from 6 locations, 2 in the UK, 2 in France and 2 in USA, all give the same results at the same time, high pings, time outs etc.

I know that, but does the tech know that, some of these techs are so quick to blame things on software/server configuration etc.

Surely if he recognises that it is a hardware issue, then any good tech will look into replacing it rather than going round and round in circles!

I was on the phone to them for nearly 10 minutes about 20 mins ago trying to explain that the NIC is to fault. Surely pinging from 6 locations in the world proves that!

Good question. Its been fine since the phone call from what I can see.

A technician has looked at the server and done a 7 minute long hardware diagnostic (lol, 7 minutes). He found no problem...

If it does it again I'm going to request a new server and I'll move everything to that rather than suffer the hassle. They're a huge DC so one server shouldn't be hard to replace or give me a second one while I transfer.

If they won't do that, I'll look else where because I can't have an unreliable server. That would destroy my image of being a good admin...

Was the server rebooted? He probably just did that "Rescue Pro" thing.
You can't do a good diagnostic without hours of staring, coupled with multiple tea and biscuit breaks, haha ...
I think you and me should go over to Roubaix and give them some lessons on how to be proper teckys, lol!
Andy wrote:If it does it again I'm going to request a new server
I think that's a good idea, ask anyway and save the wait ...
The worst thing that can happen is that they'll say no, so what the hell ...
Andy wrote:They're a huge DC
Yea, they've got over 30000 server apparently, that's quite a bit, lol ...

What image is that then? Oh, wait, no, I think I found you on Google ...
