OPENSTEP 4.2 on server

Post by mdogg »

Quick question. If I wanted to install OPENSTEP 4.2 on an x86 machine, which files on the server would I have to download.

But the package on the server (OPENSTEP 4.2.rar) includes a *.image file that you can only open with Mac software.

Thenico: I'll try your link then post back with results.

Why open it? Write it to a floppy using HFS explorer, Gemulator Explorer or TransMac. If you extract the files, it won't work.

ppc_digger:I don't think you get what I mean but anyway.

Is there a way to burn *.IMAGE files to a CD using Windows. I know you can use Mac but are there any other ways?

BTW, I know how to write the *.FLOPPYIMAGE files using rawrite so you don't need to help me there

Now that you've said that, I won't try to do anything until an answer gets confirmed.

Code: Select all

$ file "OpenStep 4.2/Openstep 4.2 CD.image"
OpenStep 4.2/Openstep 4.2 CD.image: Sun disk label '\200' 0 blocks, boot block present
$ file "OpenStep 4.2/OpenStep Boot Floppies/4.2_Install_Disk.floppyimage"
OpenStep 4.2/OpenStep Boot Floppies/4.2_Install_Disk.floppyimage: x86 boot sector
Image

It seem to work under Qemu.
Use CD-RW

On a real PC it probably won't work. BIOS can only load boot images from CDs if they use El Torito. You can create an ISO image with floppy emulation using mkisofs:

Code: Select all

mkisofs -b floppy_image.img -o iso_image.iso some_empty_folder

That is why they are an boot image called 4.2_Install_Disk.floppyimage that should be written to a floppy

For those wanting to emulate it, I suggest Parallels, it supports it very well (even widescreen resolutions)
I'm going to put together a rar with some of the OPENSTEP apps that are availible for free (Lighthouse Office apps, various freeware) in a while and upload it.

Rename it to ISO and then burn it

This probably won't work. If you have access to a Mac running OS X, open the image in Disk Utility and then try to convert it to .cdr (DVD/CD master). This can then be safely renamed to .iso.
