Microsoft won't give us windows 1.00

Post by tristan »

Hello Tristan,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service.

I understand that you would like to have Windows 1.0 for your collectionof softwares.

For Microsoft to deliver the highest quality support possible, it is necessary to expire support for discontinued products and apply those resources to support the latest developments and technologies from Microsoft. Support is no longer available for Windows 1.00.

Microsoft does not produce the software which is obsolete.

If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to reply to this e-mail.

Thank you for using Microsoft products and services.

Just a crap answer, like anyone wants support for windows 1.00 .
I still don't get it why they won't just give it, what do they have to loose?

We just have to wait till some employee of microsoft leaks it.

Allthough the spelling error is odd... Thats usaually something I do.....

Anywhich way maybe they don't have it anymore? They probably have some kind of archive but Windows 1.00 is probably in some back back corner and therfore very hard to get.

Has anybody tried to call them up? Or talk to an MS employee?
The employee I talked to said he had no access to any archieves.

You might have better luck if you were a big Microsoft Partner or something like that, and you needed to run a legacy (really legacy, I suppose) 1.0/2.0 app for business purposes. That's the only plausible situation I can come up with, and even then it's unlikely.

Why don't we everybody ask for it and see what answer we get?

They still wouldn't give you 1.00 - depending on the source, 1.00 was either never released or was recalled several weeks after it went on sale, so they're not suddenly going to let it out again now. If they were going to give you anything they'd give you 1.04 if you needed 1.0x, given that there'd be no reason to use anything older. Remember that there aren't really any Windows programs for 1.0x, as Windows then was largely just a front-end for Dos and most programs were for Dos, not Windows. It's really not worth asking them for it: it's copyrighted, they have better things to do with their time, and 1.00 is not meant for public consumption anyway.

I still think someone has it somewhere. They have to! Has there been any hinting as to what has actually changed between 1.01 and 1.00?

Rather than ask for 1.00, perhaps we should try to ask for all of the 16-bit operating systems

I think the biggest obstical is the logicstical issue. My friend from MS talked to his boss/supervisor who told him that their not only don't exist any channels for obtaining old archived stuff, but also that there doesn't exist an official archive....

Honestly, we need to face the facts; if they had it they won't give it....
Lets turn our attention to hunting things that we know existed... For example Apple's StarTrek project or even Starcraft early alphas...

I hear that. Starcraft early alphas would be amazing.

But on the topic of windows 1.00, have you directly asked for a copy or did you just ask about it. Maybe ask for backup purposes? I dunno.

I wonder if even Microsoft has it anymore? It was a long time ago when it was recalled, long before the internet and what few people may have had have probably lost it by now, or their disks have long since failed. If it has not turned up after this long it's probably extinct.

I've still never been able to find out if it was even released or not, or if it was updated to 1.01 right before it was released.

Two years ago, I got some connections from Microsoft's IP on my FTP Server. On the first time, I trace the computer and this was a ISA server from Redmon. The next day, I received a mail from a Microsoft's programmer that told me He was happy to get betas and some old stuff from his compagny.
I asked him if he could get any beta or rare stuff, and In fact no. He was a programmer but they havn't any betas on public share on the network, or some old softwares. He sents to me severals shots of old microsoft pictures and buildings. On year later, he sent by postal service a Windows 95 beta ( i don't remember the build, but this was already on OSBA ). Quite amazing. Now, he is working in an other compagny

I think we won't have any luck in finding a genuine 1.00 release anytime soon. These fake releaes appearing again and again are becoming annoying...

I highly doubt the this individual has access to older Microsoft builds (at least right offhand) anyway...unless he's an actual software developer. Even then, I think Microsoft considers themselves too "big" to worry about seemingly minute requests for Windows v1.00. It seems like huge companies like this think this way.
