phpBB to IPB - Would you donate towards the license?

Post by Andy »

Hi guys,

I know a lot of you would like this forum to be IPB powered instead of phpBB, so I decided this.

If you can donate enough for the license, then I will change to IPB. Only one problem. The price.
Invision Power Board Perpetual License · $185.00
This will give you a perpetual license to use Invision Power Board for one installation and access to all future versions. One year of support and related services is included. After one year an optional $30 renewal for support and related services is available.

Invision Power Board Yearly License · $69.95
This will give you one year license to use Invision Power Board for one installation on all current and future versions. At the end of one year your board will continue to run but will be unsupported and access to upgrades unavailable unless you renew service.

We can either go for the Perpetual License and never have to donate again

or

We can get the Yearly License and you will have to donate each year to keep the board up.

FYI, Im not even considering using a cracked version, so don't even suggest it.

All I need to know is if you guys will openly donate to get the IPB license. If not then there are no worries, we will simply stick with phpBB.

NOTE: Donations will be via PayPal only.

i think you should get the cheaper version for now. Then in a years time, figure out what to do. hopefully by then the site will have a large userbase.

Maybe get those ads on to help pay for it

The ads may be a no-go since google adsense are being f**ktards. Might be a good option to go for a year license though.

I'm for phpBB. I used both IPB (on various free forum hosts), and phpBB, and I can say that I like phpBB much better.
Also, phpBB is free, and soon, phpBB3 is going to come out, with more features than phpBB2, and still for free.
So I say: stay with phpBB, and upgrade to phpBB3, as soon as the final version of it is released.

Honestly, I don't see the difference. My favorite forum software, SMF, is free. I don't see the point in paying for forum software.
The above post is brought to you by me not listening in class and posting here instead. :D

Meh, I don't want to pay to use forums. But IPB would be cool.

I'm pretty happy with PhpBB too, so It'll be an unnecessary hard work and wasted money to switch to IPB

I am perfectly happy with PHPBB or IPB. However, I cannot donate because of my age. Anyways, the only thing I do not support is SMF. If you use SMF I will leave.

phpBB looks horrible; therefore, I vote to switch to IPB.

I (Since I can't speak for the whole group here) would choose to strive for preformace, rather than looks alone.
Anyways, It's just my opinion...

So far the majority vote goes for "no (9)", and "yes (5)". Yes phpBB can be skinned but it makes it difficult since I had to mod each skin to include the nav bar and any forum mods that become necessary.

I want you to get together in a thread and decide on some skins you like. When you have decided as a community, send me the links to the skins and Ill install them and you can choose which one you want. I for one will be sticking with the standard theme since I prefer it (for speed and simplicity).

i really like either or. im using a free hosting forum with IPB 1.3.1 i think and i like that too. its all a matter of opinion if you ask me, id be perfectly happy with either or. id like it to stay the same right now mainly because its already done, everyone is/should be use to it, and phpbb and ipb don't really differ much in the way of looks (there are differences i know, but to me they are suttle)

its really up to you andy, do what you feel is the right thing. either way, ill still be a forumer here

phpBB, I like it because I am creating a new VA and I am admin. So I chose phpBB as the forum, So far I havent found any serious problems with it. It does the job.

P.S I like the new color scheme
