I heard rumors about the unleaked SP7 for NT 4.0 . And that the Nasa and some chosen enterprises received it.
Whats true about that gossip?

A seventh service pack for NT 4 was planned, but never released. Instead of a SP7 Microsoft released this security rollup package.

I don't think so, otherwise there would be some information about it I guess..

Edit: Just found this:

Image

Quote:
"Based on discussions with our customers, we have come to the conclusion that Service Pack 7 is not needed, but that an easy way to deploy our publicly released security fixes would be appreciated by many of our customers. It is clear to us that our customers would rather have a smaller, lightweight, easily deployable way to secure their systems, rather than potentially disrupt their stable environments with another large service pack. Microsoft is therefore planning to release a comprehensive rollup of all Windows NT 4.0 security vulnerabilities as a single package in Q3 2001.

"Microsoft recognizes that some companies have been planning on a new service pack, especially since Microsoft had previously given indications that Service Pack 7 would be released. For customers who were planning on deploying Service Pack 7, we now encourage them to focus on completing rollouts of Service Pack 6a, in combination with the planned security pack. Microsoft will provide detailed instructions for deploying Service Pack 6a with the security pack.

"While Microsoft will not offer any further service packs for NT 4.0, we are committed to providing regular service packs for the currently released operating system, Windows 2000. Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000 will be released in the near future. As new versions of Microsoft operating systems are released, Microsoft will continue to evaluate the need for service packs based on our customer's requirements and feedback, and the stability of the operating system."

I'm sure somewhere someone mentioned having it or tried it, I know that's very vague.
Also they said something about broken applications.

I've seen a working draft of Windows NT4 with SP7 in it.

It could be the CmCSDVersion hack.

considering they are cumulative, sp6+the roll up would = sp7..

NT3.51, NT4 etc, are the sort of vintage stuff that a couple of us (eg Fdv, bearwin, os2fan2), play around with to make "modern". My main contribution is to figure out how to fix the registry entries (neither of these use HIVE*.INF)

nt351sp6 is pretty much a working copy with all of the fixes and some "transparent" parts slipstreamed (eg support for 48bit lba). The master was on the q: drive on the old computer, which crashed. Still, it is recovered with all of that disk, but i have to pick out which bit is the "real" release.

nt400sp7 (ie nt4 with sp7) has been built once or twice. The trick here is that you just can't use the public stuff because the result will not boot. Instead, one has to use some "private" fixes from MSFT, which i am extracting from a sp7 build, and some MSFT web pages.

I'm still not sure if i will put the modified version of fontview in it, The main diffs are the extra characters in the view, notably, Þ, þ, 0, €, £, #.

I have an NT4 install tape, that contains NT4, SP6a, the rollup, most of the public fixes, and a mitfull of private ones. It's also got some other customisations and removals.

Yes, i can do that. It's the long weekend over here, and i have the rellies down with their computers, but i will see if i can find the four tapes involved.

On the same news, general instructions for making SP6 for 3.51 are well in hand. The files from all of the service packs have been filtered, and then it lies to write registry entries for what sp5 does. This in part involves writing a new registry interpreter, that reads files like

Code:
[HKLM\,,,,,]
reg_sz name=value
reg_dword name=0xHEX, or dec
reg_expand_sz name=variable

Eventually the plan is to do things like reg_read name=value, and reg_write name=(evaluate), along with things like

reg_subst HKDU=HKU\.Default (It works in the same way that subst d: e:\path does).
reg_subst HKDU /d removes subst.

The other possibility is to name mount points, eg

default=HKU\.default

and load hives there (eg
Code:
reg_load HKU\Setup  Default
reg_subst HKDU HKU\Setup

[default\....]   (cdd to that drive\directory)
create/query/delete vars

reg_load HKU\Setup /d

Here are some screenshots, of NT4 SP7, slipstreamed. It's server, but there's a registry fix for it.

Image

NT4 after install. The screen is black, so i launched winmsd.exe

Image

Some apps have been customised. CMD is still CMD, here with ver shown. Notepad is now Metapad Edit is the version from Windows 95, not the Qbasic version.

Image

Winver (top) and Control panel (bottom) run. New icons are "DirectX", "TweakUI"

It crashes when run in VirtualBox, but the piccies were captured in VPC.

Image

Modified command.com from Windows 98 (top, supposedly build 2400), and bottom (6.22, modified to 6.30), in NT4.

both command.com are de-versioned. S:\ is created via net share s: \\penning\h$

I second that. Would be pretty nice if you could upload it.

Plan is to upload.

I've modified the VPC2007 install stuff so it will work under this DOS, This overcomes bug with sp6a.

The fontview.exe will be a separate file.

Just got to figure out how to upload it = custom OS?

Command.com prompts in the windows are from different packages, which are not in this release.

This is being uploaded to beta-archive.

It does not include the modified version of fontview.exe, nor the command.com from MSDOS 6.30 or 7.10.2400, which are shown in the build.

Fontview.exe may make a wyk build, along with an interesting win95cmd.exe with the NT4 icon. Alternately, i might just use one from nt5 style, which adds all the 2k features to earlier versions of Windows.

PS It's an old post, but i want to keep it all together.

PPS It's in the upload box. wait for dwnld.

Where do you want to go today?

All Microsoft operating systems!
I would also be interested in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 7. When is it from by the way? I noticed that it has a slight graphical resemblence to Windows 2000.
