Windows AS LE was/is based on betas of Windows Server 2003 and thus the question arises if this is to be considered as warez or not. I have two versions of it, v1.0 (I think) which seems to be based on "Whistler Advanced Server" Beta 2 (35xx) and v1.2, the newest, which I think is based on .NET RC1 (that's what the documentation says).

But be warned, it will only run on Itanium (2) CPUs.

But is it a product you can pay for?

You can't/couldn't buy it separately. You could only get it via OEMs or MSDN/TechNet.

What actually is it though, this one really intrigues me as it's not something you ever hear about? Is it actually something that anyone uses for real, or is it a beta? Are there any screenshots of it available? Is there any difference between it and Server 2003 Itanium Edition, apart from it being beta? I guess it's a pretty useless build to actually have though, given that no-one has an Itanium computer.

I think it's "actually" a beta because although maybe used as a production OS, it's still based on beta (.NET Server) code and was then replaced by Server 2003 IA64 when that RTM'd. As for the difference between it and Server 2003 IA64, this is simple – Server 2003 is newer and the one to use if you have an IA64 box and need to run a Microsoft OS as XP/IA64 has been cancelled. I haven't seen any screenshots of it yet.

Here's some info on that ship: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/pres ... hippr.mspx
