Hard drive problem

Post by XDude »

I got this one year old 80GB WD hard drive which the file system could not be read by the windows installed.
I tried reformatting the hard drive, it says it's damaged or something that wouldn't let windows format it.
The bios does not say bad during the S.M.A.R.T. check, plus there wasn't any bad sentor before the failure.

Do you guys thinks it's bad or there's something that causes windows not able to read it (eg. a virus, spyware?)

I'd stick that drive into a Linux box and check if it's accessible from there. If it's not, give testdisk a try. It's very useful for recovering a corrupted partition table and stuff like that.

Alternatively, you could go to the western digital website and download Data Lifeguard Diagnostics and see what it tells you about the drive.

I guess it wasn't a good idea to drop it to see if it was real after all
