Important decision about OSBA OS

Post by ppc_digger »

Due to insufficient low level Darwin documentation, I thought it would be better to switch the core from Darwin to Linux. Since most userland Darwin tools are GNU anyway, this would not be such a big change. I do not intend to make another generic Linux distro. I just want to move from the Darwin kernel to the Linux kernel. opkg, for example, runs perfectly on Linux.

The low-level Darwin documentation is far from complete. For example, after months of searching for documentation about its framebuffer device (in order to make oDisplay run directly on top of Darwin, without X11), all I have is a segfaulting driver (which derives from XDarwin code, not official documentation). In contrast, after 20 minutes of googling and programming I had a fully working Linux framebuffer driver.

So, what do you think?

Yeah, a Linux-based OS (not just another distro) would be fine. Not only is it much more open, but the LFS project provides a handy book on building a base Linux system.
