I'm pretty sure they'd be in driver.cab, possibly in a sub-cab file related to dx or directx.

Ok, it looks like all the files are in the i386 directory, compressed. Their names are dx*.dll, dx*.sys, and dx*.exe.

OK I took a good look. It seems the DX files are in the I386. There are some hal's in the driver cab. Are the hal's linked to the dx?

Let me rephrase the last question. If I use the driver cab from 1 os to another os. what other files do I need to move? The DX files are in the I386 folder but the driver cab has the hal.

Give us an idea of your project at hand, might be able to help out with either ideas or otherwise.

OK I am going to fix Neptunes problem with video drivers. I am thinking fixing DX might help. The hal are in the driver cab, so does the DX files in the same OS needs to go in there too?

Can't you download the redist version of DX and unpack/install it on neptune?

A lot of people have had a go at doing this in the past, with little success, not saying to give up though, but unless you can update the kernel somehow, you're probable travelling down the same path others have travelled before you.
I can't help you here, best of luck though.
Have you tried running the dxdiag program, it reports the files and thier versions.

maybe the 2000 kernel could be used/adapted for this problem

That is a good possibility.
I worked on neptune a few years ago and took a break from it. Maybe I will get further along this time

Here is what I did and apparently it is wrong.OK here is what I did pretty much.
I took Neptune (an alpha OS) I put in windows 2000 driver cab and DX files. Upgraded it with Gurglemayer USP 5.1 for windows 2000. Opened driver cab and relpaced NTKRNLMP and NTOSKRNL then recabbed it back to lzx-21. I replaced driver index also fron windows 2000.
I am thinking of using the driver cab from an old whistler beta.

In reply to your emails on this topic...
You need to get yourself a copy of PE Explorer, it'll enable you to look at
a files dependancies, imports, exports & functions carried out, you'll soon
see that simply swapping files from one OS to another is time not very
well spent...
As was said above, you will indeed need to modify the kernel files used
by Neptune, then use the Win2000 HALs, if you don't modify the kernel
files, you'll end up with what everyone else has done, & end up with an
OS that is not very stable or functional...
I have a very good e-book on the NT-Kernel that'll give you some idea
of what you're up against, I'll dig it out & email it to you some time soon...

Here's a pic of the 5111 ntoskrnlexe using pe-explorer...
Image

Here's the same pic of the Win2000 version, notice any difference...
Image

Keep plugging away at it though, & a hint that tells you you're close, is when
you install it in VPC, & DXDIAG correctly detects your CPU & MSINFO32...
Sometimes DxDiag will, however MsInfo never will, & will often just say 65535mhz
in the cpu section, when on a late system using VPC that is, however when
it correctly detects the CPU, chances are you've made improvements to the
compatibility of running on a late system with a late AGP card & drivers...

Swapping all the DX files is what I did to make it run on my system when it
was running an ATI 9200se card, & then I could only use a very early driver
revision from around 2004-ish, attempting to use later drivers just resulted in
a continous reboot loop during bootup...
The ATI 9200 drivers would only work if I had at least DX8.1 installed & running
without faults...
...

it would be great if we could make a community service pack with Neptune fixes
(activity centers , Help centers, etc)

I've already made my own Service Pack for Neptune...
& if anyone thinks the screens are BS, I made a video of it installing
as well, just like the Activity Center installer I made, though the 4 minute
video is 80mb...
