I read through the stickied thread in this board but wanted to see what particular emulators macOS users are using to emulate pre XP systems. Virtualbox, Parallels, Fusion? It looks like there are a number of options for PC users, but not as many for Mac people.

I don't currently have a bootcamp install so I figured it would be a waste of HD space to dual boot my machine just to run a VM from. Not to mention, I have a newer Mac so would have to install Windows 10 (blech!)

QEMU, VMWare, VirtualBox, and maybe VirtualPC works on macOS still?

Probably 95 or XP
VPC for Mac was PowerPC only afaik. You would have to be running snow leopard or lower for it to run unless you have a PPC Mac.

I used to use Wine to run PCem when using OS X. Although now it's 64bit only I don't think there is a 64bit pure Wine at the moment. I gave up on OS X, and just boot Windows 10 natively now on my Mac Pros.

PCem runs great on macOS. V14 and V15 both support wxWidgets and SDL, so are much more friendly for non-Windows use.

There are some instructions on how to compile it on macOS here:
http://pcem-emulator.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3267

After compiling, I put it inside an app bundle, and launch it from my Dock.

For emulation there's also MESS, PCE, QEMU, etc.

Windows 3.1x and Windows 98 run very well on VirtualBox if you configure them correctly. Even using VT-x. You just need to make sure you're using VESA drivers, and also use WQGHLT on Windows 3.1x.

All versions of Linux 2.2 onwards at least support VESA framebuffer, so will run much better on VirtualBox than PCem (if set up correctly).

For me, ancient versions of Linux crash in PCem V15, but work fine in V14. V15 is a lot faster when it works.

WINE works great on macOS, and the new Catalina support is coming soon-ish.
