React OS 0.3.9 Has been released.
After a couple of months, the next alpha version is out.
From the website, here are the changes:
Quote:
* Reduced minimum memory requirement to 32Mb. In theory ReactOS can now be installed with 24Mb and run with only 20Mb
* A new, faster Hyperspace Mapping Interface has been implemented in the kernel resulting in a speed improvement of over 300%
* Security check improvements to the Object Manager in the kernel improves performance by 500%. Noticeable during large file/registry operations
* Various NDIS and AFD problems have been solved which increase compatibility with 3rd party NIC drivers and hardening of the network stack
* Preliminary support for sound via the new Kernel Streaming service. It's now possible to use the ac97 driver via our new Port Class library to play sound bytes using winamp
* A great deal of work has been put into the command prompt to make it much more compatible. It's now able to run very complex scripts, including our own Build Environment
* Many bugfixes to the kernel mode portion of the GDI resulting in much improved drawing engine across all bit depths
* Synchronization of most of the Wine usermode DLLs

I'm testing the new version now!

If things keep going this way ReactOS will be a 3 second boot from the boot loader to the desktop (someone with an ssd and a fast computer needs to try this lol). I personally have been waiting for ReactOS .4 Beta before giving it another shot (last time that I used it it had horrible compatability)

Been trying it as live cd. Good to go, but a lot of improvements are expected. :)

Its looking pretty good from bochs - how does it run on actual hardware?

Well I installed it at my dads and here are my findings for real hardware:

You can only have 1 primary partition with the partition manager so I had to use gparted to wipe the drive
You cannot have any bootloader except Windows (I do not know if it XP only but I installed XP halfway to get rid of grub) on before install.
     Install is otherwise OK
Either one of the following are correct:

You can not use a wireless usb mouse and keyboard during install (for second part when it detects hardware)
You can not try to boot to ram or in debug after using the cd (for second part of install)
You have to make sure you check that a feature is actually implemented before counting on it for the future (system repair etc)
And lastly, you may need to do a full format of the disk with the partitioner 2x or else it says the drive is 8gb

Once inside you realize you need a network driver but you have no other OS's so you can either use your original windows disks or get it from online with another computer and a usb.
Also, my mouse is really jumpy if it loads context menus but I think it is because of lack of a proper driver at this point.
On that note I am leaving ReactOS and using it all the time there for the next month to see how usable the current system can be on real hardware.

By the time it's mature, they won't make your computer anymore.

You will have to wait a very long time for the "final" release...
Just see their Roadmap, as you will see, that they have a long way...
So, you can say lile 3DRealms :D "When it's done" :D

Windows Server 2003 SP1 for Kernel, Windows Vista for UI.

Considering ReactOS is about as stable as Jello on a plate, in a microwave, powered, while sitting in an oven, at highest heat with the broiler on, I would say that ReactOS is just a tad too unstable for production use yet. I think they've already shown what could be done. As a collector, you could very well add ReactOS to the Alpha collection of great OS's.

It's more stable now (atleast to me), try the latest revision (trunk).

When I tried ReactOS on my P4 with a seperate partition (Windows 7 on C:\, and ReactOS for D:\) it messed up the PT and I had to re-install Windows 7.

As I can found, ReactOS is still buggy with a real hardware. The most stable was 0.3.0-RC or so on, but it had a few functionallity. 0.3.1 couldn't work almost everywhere except emulators, then situation goes better, but not good enough.

You should install it manually. The best way is to set it up on a virtual drive (make a vhd by disk manager of win7, use Virtual Box to install reactos on it, make only the first stage, mount a vhd, copy everything to d:\, edit freeldr.ini to boot from d:). Then you should boot it. Good idea is grub1 or grubdos (may be, installed on a cd or flashdrive). It can load both from c: (chainloader +1) and from freeldr.sys.
So, in command line
root (hd0,1) <-------- drive where reactos is installed, may be (hd1,1)
kernel /freeldr.sys
boot
