I am going to build a custom windows 2000. I would like to base it on nt5 but a little bit better. Can someone make a nice logon screen and a boot screen for it? I would like to change the startbar if that is possible.
If anyone has some cool wave sounds to add feel free to upload them.
I know that windows 2000 is old and dated but I think it is the best operating system MS ever made.

I just want to improve it a little.

Thats right, it has to be 16 colours. Even XP used 16 colours for its boot screen.

I downloaded some from Little White Dog. When I changed the pallet to 16 colors the whole image was distorted. Is there a place to download boot screens ready to go?

The boot screens normally use custom pallets thats why. They don't use the standard 16 color pallet, its modified to the 16 colours it uses in the image rather than standard ones.

Do a Google search (forgot the program and the steps to do) and it should not be to hard to find (if I remember properly...)

I am just going to work on windows 2000 for a while with a few GUI changes. When windows 2000 is loading where is the file "loading network, loading personal settings etc." kept?
When windows 2000 is installing where is that kept?
I found most everything else.
DW

The text for those screens in in the Winlogon.exe
Image

& the bitmaps seen whilst those messages are shown are in the MsGina.dll
Image

A word of advice though, before you start swapping bitmaps out for others,
extract the originals 1st, to see both thier original size & properties,
properties meaning whether or not they're RLE "Runtime Length Encoded" bitmaps,
which are compressed...
I've found in the past that if the bitmap I used was uncompressed, & the original
was compressed, the file itself can & often will become corrupt, although moreso
if it's a Kernel file or another file with large amounts of string text like the shell32.dll...
Hope that helps...

Oh, & another point, don't stick with one resource editor, they all have their
lurks & perks...
Pe Explorer is great, but corrupts the string text in the Kernel files, use Xn Resource
editor for that, reshack seems to screw the files also if large amounts of string code
is being edited, I have certain jobs assigned for certain editors, as you'll work out
over time...

Some sucess
Things wrong Explorer using more ram, BMP looks grainy

I changed the startbar a little but changes to button didn't take.

It did install correctly in QEMU and also with cd so that is good.

I will admitt that I am not in the same league as KO, Hougtimo, and Troy. This stuff is hard to get it right.
I will take any offers of advice

Hey dirt, been awhile! I offered this to you last time you were talking about building a custom version of 2000 on the old forums, before they got shut down, but here it is again...

Image

You will have to use this version here, still in *.bmp format, not the jpg version the forum uploaded, because it needs to be 16bit like the others have said. You'll need to use resource hacker to place it in the ntoskernel.exe to make it show up, but it looks pretty good if I do say so myself...

get the original here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UX0W08OL

Hope this helps you get back on track with your project!

I like the looks of it. Thanks. How did you make it?

Using MS Paint, believe it or not! Using that allowed me to keep the color palette within the 16 color limits and I could copy and paste bits from other images I'd seen around. I think the symbol near the loading bar came from MS VirtualPC (or was it vmware?) and the black barscroll came from one of the old XPize packs. I was just tinkering and trying to make things look good for a laptop I was giving my brother which at that time required Win2000 due to driver issues (later fixed with one of the laptop infs converter apps). I think I used Irfanview to run a filter on the main Windows 2000 image in the middle, but it's been several years, so I don't really remember any more.

Glad you like it, hope it will be useful to you!

It is nice.
Can you make one with the large MS flag flowing in grey scale?

Oh wait, sorry I meant ViOrb, because ViStart doesnt work with the Classic start menu, and has even less support than XP for PNG.
Here's a screenie anyway

You just need the .NET framework
