I've discovered an way to run your own file ext like an exe file.

First you make an .reg (just cal it bae.reg) file and you put this in :
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bae]
@="baefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bae\PersibaentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile]
@="Beta Archive executable"
"EditFlags"=hex:38,07,00,00
"TileInfo"="prop:FileDescription;Company;FileVersion"
"InfoTip"="prop:FileDescription;Company;FileVersion;Create;Size"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\DefaultIcon]
@="%SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll,-13"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shell\open]
"EditFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shell\runas]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shell\runas\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shellex]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\CmdLineExt]
@="{F0407C3D-349C-42B9-B83E-821E31623DF9}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shellex\DropHandler]
@="{86C86720-42A0-1069-A2E8-08002B30309D}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\PifProps]
@="{86F19A00-42A0-1069-A2E9-08002B30309D}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\ShimLayer Property Page]
@="{513D916F-2A8E-4F51-AEAB-0CBC76FB1AF8}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{B41DB860-8EE4-11D2-9906-E49FADC173CA}]
@=""

then save it and import it to your registry and you have your very own executable file extention!
To test it just rename an existing .exe to an .bae file and run it!

To make it realy your own past the reg in notepad and replase all the bae stuff and replace it with your own (Start notepad > paste registry from the code above > goto edit > click on replace > type in the search for box : bae > and in the replace box your own extention > press replace all >save your reg file and import it > have fun!)

Very interesting...

Looks like you've done a replace all on that; shouldn't

Code:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\baefile\DefaultIcon]
@="%SybaemRoot%\Sybaem32\shell32.dll,-13"

read

Code:
@="%SybaemRoot%\Sybaem32\shell32.dll,-13"

And the likes? (Appears that "ste" has been replaced with "bae")
Very nice tech demo :D

Very nice tech demo :D

I know why that was 1. it was late (2 am in the morning here) 2. .ste is my own executable extention.
But i fixed it so the path is fixed now :D

This *could* be used maliciously. Infact, after years of seeing thousands of virus infections, I'm almost certain that several infections exploit this functionality. All a program must do is execute the registry edits as an administrator, exploiting some other security flaw, then bam, the program has got control of the system by using a non-standard executable file format. It's evil... but interesting at the same time.
