Try using BootSkin, so you do not have to modify windows files.

Bootskin: http://www.download.com/BootSkin/3000-2 ... Pid=362671

And you can simply create you own Bootscreen or download your favourites and you only need to open them, and they are installed, but you must activate them.

I tried it with this program and was very amazed, then i made a big mistake, i deleted the original Windows XP Bootscreen, then my system have Booting problems and starts after 2 trys :(

If you are using XP SP2 or higher you can use the /bootlogo /noguiboot switches in NTLDR's boot.ini. You can implement this in winnt.sif

Steps:
1. Make sure in winnt.sif, OEMPreinstall is equal to 1
2. In winnt.sif write
Code:
[GUIRunOnce]
"%systemroot%\bootscreen.cmd"

3. In notepad write and save in $OEM$\$$
Code:
bootcfg /RAW "/BOOTLOGO /NOGUIBOOT" /A  /ID 1

4. Save your boot bitmap (16 Colours) in $OEM$\$$
5. Test it

/BOOTLOGO
Use this switch to have Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 display an installable splash screen instead of the standard splash screen. First, create a 16-color (any 16 colors) 640x480 bitmap and save it in the Windows directory with the name Boot.bmp. Then add "/bootlogo /noguiboot" to the boot.ini selection.

_________

For 1st Stage GUI Setup, edit NTOSKRNL.EXE for the boot bmps and makecab it as STPKRNL.EX_ and in OsLoadOptions in txtsetup.sif append the following to the text line.

Code:
/Kernel=StpKrnl.EXE

And add this to SourceDisksFiles

Code:
stpkrnl.exe = 100,,,,,,,,3,3,,1,2

Thanks for the info, but is there any animation displayed during the boot or is that impossible?
And what do you mean with "For 1st Stage GUI Setup, edit NTOSKRNL.EXE for the boot bmps and makecab it as STPKRNL.EX_" because this is the whole point because microsoft has changed the color table in the kernel, the bootscreen will look like rubbish there for done this with TweakXP and tuneup utilitys. I know how to edit the kernels (PE Explorer/Reshacker) but if i import the bootscreen it will look like this :

It should look like this :
