What is ReactOS Classified by?

Post by DullPilot »

I know what ReactOS wants to accomplish, but does that mean that it's Linux, or is it more like Windows?
There are 4 major Credit Card Networks. Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and the one where you have to discover the 3 stores that accept it.

More like a white-room Windows NT clone.

IIRC they forbade folks from using the leaked windows code.

ReactOS is a free and open-sourced operating system based on the Windows NT architecture, providing support for existing applications and drivers, and an alternative to the current dominant consumer operating system. Compatibility with Microsoft Server 2003 is the ReactOS design goal.

It would be perhaps important to start by saying what ReactOS -isn't-. It is not another wrapper built on Linux, like WINE. It does not attempt or plan to compete with WINE; in fact, the user-mode part of ReactOS is almost entirely WINE-based and our two teams have cooperated closely in the past. ReactOS is also not "yet another OS". It does not attempt to be a third player, like SkyOS or any other alternative OS out there. People are not meant to uninstall Linux and use ReactOS instead; ReactOS is a replacement for Windows users who want a Windows replacement that behaves just like Windows.

Why exactly would it be Linux?

I would class it as a Windows NT family. While it has no code in common, it is meant to have 100% binary compatibility. An analogue you can find is Haiku/BeOS. Is Haiku a BeOS family? Most would say 'yes'.

There's other open source operating systems that aren't Linux, so this is a bad way to classify them.

A very bad way indeed. Did MS-DOS suddenly become Linux when MS released the source to it?

"Is it WINE?" would've been a more reasonable question since at least those two share parts of the code. Even though they're not the same, maybe you could think of ROS as "a way to run WINE on bare metal" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
