Wow... I didn't believe this would happen in my lifetime :)

A blit[1] emulator just landed in the 9front repo (games/blit) [2]

v8 runs on SimH. It's just a bit tricky to install since you need to bootstrap it from a 4BSD

v9 is Sun3 arch only, and TME (the only working Sun3 emulator so far) is apparently not yet ready to run it. I haven't tried MAME yet but I think their Sun3 emulation is still a bit behind TME

I haven't looked at v10 yet

I wonder if V9 or V10 (seeing as they're apparently derived from 4.3BSD, and 4.3BSD was ported to the PC - that's basically what Jolix is) could be coaxed onto a PC.

It wasn't 4.3BSD itself ported, and said port was modified more than what most people think.

Do you have a predone v8 disk image? Or the tapes?
EDIT: Got it.

The tapes are linked in the first post.

Pre-made disk images here (courtesy of neozeed, not mine). But the instructions here are pretty clear and easy to follow. Note that you have to use "set noasync" if you use a SimH that's newer than 3.9 because of an emulator bug.

Getting it to run TCP/IP looks tricky though, your best bet to get data in and out is probably UUCP.

Pretty sure TCP/IP wouldn't even work properly. 4.2BSD's TCP implementation has a bug that was fixed in 4.3BSD which makes it incompatible with modern TCP.

v8 is not related to 4.2BSD.
But anyway, I'm also not entirely convinced that v8 has a "compatible" TCP/IP stack, but I didn't have time to play around with it yet

BTW it seems I had an old version of TME (or didn't try hard enough), because apparently v9 UNIX runs pretty well on it

V8 is a 4.1cBSD derivative, isn't it?

It is, I assume the same bug would be in 4.1cBSD, which had a TCP stack, but very close to 4.2BSD. Hence why I assume incompatibility.

I think they removed the IP and TCP implementation and wrote their own.

Completely bypassed is the PDP-7 Unix assembly listing - or has that already been talked about somewhere?

Well, McIlroy suggested that it was possible the TCP/IP stack was simply a Ritchification (for Streams) of the BSD stack code.
