I'm just making this thread to dump the links for various pre-release distributions I've found. The reason for this is rarity; betas that were released in 2011 are very hard to find nowadays, and the difficulty only increases if you want to find older betas.

These will certainly not be accepted on the FTP, but here you go:

SuSE Linux 8.2/AMD64 Beta 9: (2003-06-30)

Ubuntu 6.10 Beta (2006-09-28, Desktop/Live ISO for i386):

(Ed)Ubuntu 9.10 Daily Build (DVD ISO, i386) (2009-05-26):
ftp://nyagan.net/pub/os/linux/
(NOTE: Look for karmic-dvd-i386.iso. This ISO is huge, clocking in at around 4.9GB, but that's because it includes a live session which does not work. Also note that you can only install the basic Ubuntu distro by only selecting the 'Ubuntu Desktop' option during install. If you try to install the other options, the install will fail. You can install the Edubuntu packages later installing 'edubuntu-desktop' with the apt tool of your choice after the first login. Most of these problems can be attributed to the fact that Edubuntu 9.10 was the first version to use a combined live/install DVD after only being an addon CD for two years. This is an especially early version (IIRC, this is right between Alpha 1 and Alpha 2, and Edubuntu 9.10 prereleases weren't even public until Alpha 6) so it can be assumed that they were still working out the infrastructure of the DVD at this point.)

Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 3 (Desktop ISO, i386):
ftp://115.236.48.226/pub_old/%E8%BD%AF%E4%BB%B6/OS/

Wow! That is a huge collection! I have been looking for these for a while now. If only they could collate them all on one website. Thank you!

No problem, just doing my part in the effort made to preserve them. I found more recent (but not too recent) *buntu betas, and will be posting them shortly. Just for a bit of reference, I usually try to collect betas before mid-2012.

UPDATE: IIRC, I just may have SUSE Linux 9.1 RC5.....Nope, I got confused and mistook SLES 9 RC5 to be this.

UPDATE 2: I found a new link containing both x86 and AMD64 versions of SLES 9 RC5. The link will be updated soon.

I remember fedoraproject's FTP having almost all Fedora versions... I picked out a Fedora 19 Alpha once, but I never got to install it because it didn't seem to work in VirtualBox.

Wow; impressive collection! I actually am trying to build a similar sort of collection myself, but only have final copies of various systems. I don't have any betas of any free system images; however, I do have betas and pre-releases for Firefox, Phoenix, SeaMonkey, and other Mozilla-made goodies (Mozilla still has all these available in http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/ ). And I also know of several mirrors where you can find archived penguins, etc. such as at http://linuxfreedom.com/Distros/ or ftp://ftp.riken.jp/ or here http://ftp.linux.cz/pub/linux/slax/ for the whole Slax collection. Another good spot to find free software releases is https://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ For all the Mint releases, try here for 1-4: ftp://linuxfreedom.com/linuxmint/linuxmint.com/archive/ and here on the same server for v6 to the present: ftp://linuxfreedom.com/linuxmint/linuxmint.com/stable/ And Old DOS has several BSDs and Gnu/Linux systems on it's server as well (you'll need the FTP credentials, though).

Yet, in all the 'net travels, I have never been able to locate Fedora 15 Alpha ever again. It had/has a special Gnome Shell in it (I think 2.9?) before 3 went gold. I had it once, and can't find it again. But in any case, I hope these links help and good luck.

Thanks for these! Also, if you have a recent Fedora version handy, you can use the Delta ISOs to apply delta patches to one ISO until you reach Fedora 15 Alpha (start from the Fedora 15 Alpha TC1 ISO).

That GNOME Shell version is 2.91.6. However, you can't get it to work in a VM.

Thank you for the Fedora tip and Gnome revision; it's appreciated. More links I could recommend for you to find old free software images would be at universities and computer labs. Most of those FTP servers don't get flushed for years, and there are lucky finds on them. An example would be like this one: http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/

Best of luck with it all.

Coming soon to a post near you:

(also containing other versions from 6.2 onwards, but this is one of only two 5.x betas I managed to get)

I also remember offering a few FreeBSD betas on here, but mrpijey denied my request because it could simply be compiled from source or something, so it really wouldn't be something to preserve. <- Don't quote me on that.

Well, good luck finding any 4.x betas (just an example), source or not.... I only found one from 12 final releases (4.0-4.11), and it wasn't even an actual beta, just the latest binaries from CVS (from late March 1999).

UPDATE: A bit more content should be up soon. This batch includes stuff like this:

I've added a bit more stuff to the collection over the past few days. I've also found a few betas which are not in ISO format, but I don't know whether anyone would want them or not.

Thank you! I was just able to get Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1 after I accidentally cracked my 6 year old CD. Now if I could only get Alpha 1 or 2 that would be perfect. Those alphas were definitely the last really great live cd's they made, with a full desktop, office, and gimp all under 700 mb.

Nope, Alphas 1 and 2 are only available for Xubuntu. There is a link for Alpha 3 in the main post, though. Also, a couple of links have gone down since the original post. I will remove them soon.

Might I suggest you include filename + hash (MD5 / SHA1) for future reference?

Sure! I'll start with the stuff I have already downloaded.

Meandering through FreeBSD's ftp lead to stumbling on quite a few old betas in the form of virtual machine images with the two sources appearing to be identical.

main ftp: http://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/VM-IMAGES/
ftp archive: http://ftp-archive.freebsd.org/pub/Free ... VM-IMAGES/

Why aren't these accepted on the FTP? They are betas.

They are open source. That's one reason why.

Open source can lead to a can of worms as to what is and is not allowed and flatly rejecting any and all is at least simple and consistent.

Why don't you back them up in the Archive.org?

FreeBSD's releases are dvd iso, not cd, and generally have a matching compressed iso. A complete set of a single release version comes to around 30GB.. multiplied by three beta releases and three RC releases..

That is a *lot* to archive.
