I'm an oldskool linux user, that's why I prefer Slackware.

Well that makes sense, you kno in gnome you can move the menu to the bottem, thats what i did, until i got used to it being at the top

I'm a Mac user primarily now, and therefore I prefer Gnome with the menu bar on top.

Gentoo, because of the ricer-placebo effect.

Post subject:  Slackware death

I abandoned slackware when the lead author fell really ill, and I was tired of the same package management that has been there since day 1.

I moved to Gentoo after that for a number of reasons. Number one, package management. Its all there. No hunting for which tgz contained the lib you needed. All my apps that support gnome will be built with gnome support if I just place "gnome, gtk, gtk+" and whatever else in my use flags. I personally use WindowMaker, but being able to have things not compiled by default with crap like Motif is a big plus.

Ubuntu, because it's the closest to being an actual usable main operating system instead of a fun thing to boot into every once in a while.

lol, two weeks ago I installed kubuntu on my main PC, but it got sort of annoying, I thought it would be the perfect OS but it wasn't  ,
I still use it in vmware though frequently,

I think different versions of Linux should go with different tasks but my overal favorites are...

Arch - It works quickly and I feel the most in control
Damn Small Linux - It does a thing that no other Distrobutions are good at
Gentoo - Once installed first time Linux users can often use it better then others

Arch is a nice distro. I absolutely adore pacman, its package manager. So simple, like a hybrid rpm/portage, without the hassle of annoying -dev packages.

That said, I went the rough route and did LFS and did a little modifying of the process to use pacman as the package manager. Its a good feeling to know everything that's going on in your system. I mean, if some people like to build their own computers, why not build your own OS? :D
