Zeta 1.21

Post by RentedMule »

Has anyone gotten a hold of Zeta 1.21? It is now being shipped. I shelled out $99 for the 1.2 version and it doesn't seem there is an upgrade path. Wondering if I am insane enough to purchase this incremental upgrade. Some feedback is appreciated.

When zeta 1.2 was offered I bought the upgrade which was in fact the full version for much less dollars.
I would wait till 1.4 comes out.

I think Zeta 1.21 and the zeta you have are not very different, i would wait until 1.5 is released at the least, that is supposed to be the one with the most features, and rumored multi-user support.

zeta is an attempt to take BeOS 5.1 Dano, which was leaked btw, and continue its development. I like how well Zeta looks and all, but there are no more applications for the BeOS platform. Maybe if this was released years ago, there would be bigger user base and more applications. Yellotab/magnussoft waited 2 long to release this for it to be any good. I love BeOS though. I still use it on my BeBox and on most of my PCs, including an Apple Beige G3.

Btw, Zeta is based on the Dano source code licensed to YellowTab/magnussoft from Be, not the leaked version. If you want the leaked version, which was an unreleased beta, find PhOS online. it is multi-user, but is a little tempermental. I know, it crashed a few times on me. Its like Windows Chicago\Whistler or Georgia. But especially Georgia, which never left beta (i wonder how many ppl will get that joke, Georgia is codename for Windows ME)

I can upload PhOS if anybody wants it, i need 2 giv back 2 the community anyways

I personally think that Zeta is a joke. BeOS was a very fast and stable operating system. Zeta still has got it's look and feel, but it is damn slow and unstable. I wouldn't pay money for this OS, you can get much better ones with a larger amount of applications for free.

Slow and Unstable?

Post by RentedMule »

Have you ever even USED Zeta? What makes it slow? It runs nice and speedy on my PII 300 laptop.

And it has never crashed...

Don't base your opinion on a livecd.

I formed by orginal, negetive, opinions based on Zeta's releasea a couple of years ago? Have they changed much? Do the bundled programs work?

Zeta is fast, small and stable. I would use it for my main OS if there was more selection of software. I burn a lot of cds and dvds and this is very limited.

anyone here used Zeta 1.21 except live cd yet? I have 1.2, and I'm wondering are there enough reasons for me to upgrade?

Well the problem with Zeta is the very limited hardware support. This problem makes Zeta virtually unusable on modern PC hardware. Older Hardware is probably best for Zeta.
Maybe I can get my hand on a copy of Zeta 1.21 but I doubt that i will get it running on my hardware. But I know some people who are capable of running Zeta and I will ask them, if 1.21 has significant changes to 1.2

For all who want to take a look at BeOS/Zeta you can either use the Zeta live CD, an old BeOS 5 PE or the new open-source Haiku builds...

Hardware Support

Post by RentedMule »

What hardware do you have that isnt supported? My Zeta desktop is a P4 2GHZ with all "modern" hardware. Everything worked at first boot. And keep in mind, I like Zeta so much, I give it to others to use. Not once have I had anyone complain about any of the above. I had one trouble user who simply didn't understand that it wasnt "Windows"... that he couldn't run Windows software directly. Obviously, a mistake on my part. I got him back to Windows.

So seriously... what do you have that isn't supported? (For the love of god, don't even mention a wireless chipset. Every OS other than windows and OpenBSD has issues here.)

Upgrade

Post by RentedMule »

Ihave bought only the upgrades in the past, but since Magnussoft took over, you can't buy an update without confirming your purchase of the full version of Zeta at some point
